Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Hi. Welcome to our small, family-owned bookstore. Printed in 1866 by Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer. A beautiful book. 11 1/4" x 9" x 1 9?16". " The Life of Man symbolised by the months of the year In a series of illustrations by John Leighton, F.S.A., and poutrayed in their seasons and phase…s with passages selected from ancient and modern authors by Richard Pigot," Bound in dark brown tooled leather, embossed with mid-Nineteenth Century artwork (including four portraits) on each cover. Gilt short title on the front cover and spine. (Gilt is still bright as new.) The covers are very good, but do show signs of wear, mostly small rubs/bruises , but also wear on the corners and bottom edge and the length of both edges of the spine. The three edges of the page block are gilded--some scratches on them. Decorated endpapers. The contiguous blank pages are spotted: may be foxing, may be decoration. There is also some scattered foxing on the pages. On the second blank page there is an inscription from a gift-giver, dated 1872, and some bits of writing, probably from earlier sellers. What the title means: each Chapter designates a calendar month and a corresponding "season of life"; for instance, January-The Infant and Nursling, February-The Schoolboy, up to December-The Patriarch and the End. Each section is filled with apropos stories, brief essays, and poems. Each page is decoratively framed and has many black and white drawings and illuminated letters. The book is dedicated to Lord Houghton of Fryston Hall, whose "love of the beautiful Typography, Xylography, and Emblematic Art, are well known." 240 pages. Binding is tight. An exceptionally attractive antiquarian book in remarkable condition for its age (I think). Packaged using bubble wrap and a sturdy cardboard box. Tracking number provided for no extra cost. Thanks for checking out this book from our small town brick-and-mortar and supporting a small business.
