Volume 3 only: faint stain front cover, gilt spine lettering lightly rubbed. 220 + 204 + 108 pp. Fine binding. Originally published in 1817, this is the 1825 edition. A handsome set of Cowper's poems printed by the famous printers C. and C. Whittingham of Chiswick, with illustrations by Richard Westall. Charles Whittingham (1767 - 1840) was an English printer. In 1789 he set up a small printing press in a garret off Fleet Street, London, with a loan obtained from the type-founding firm of William Caslon, and, by 1797, his business had so increased that he was enabled to move into larger premises. Whittingham inaugurated the idea of printing cheap, handy editions of standard authors, and, on the bookselling trade threatening not to sell his productions, took a room at a coffee house and sold them by auction himself. In 1809 he started a paper-pulp factory at Chiswick, near London, and in 1811 founded the Chiswick Press.

This work is an apologue, or allegorical story, about happiness and suffering. Illustrated, with drawings by Richard Westall. With an engraved title page and three plates. This work was written so that John…son could help to pay the costs of his mother's funeral, hence why the work was written in a week. The work concerns a young man travelling in the company of a teacher to encounter and examine human suffering in order to determine the root of happiness. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine and to the board edges. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spine due to rubbing. Marks to front board. Prior owner's inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Finely bound in contemporary green straight-grained morocco with large, elaborate decorative gilt borders, gilt corner devices, and central vignette to the boards; the spines ruled and richly decorated in gilt and with titles in gilt. Gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrat…ed with two engraved title pages and 29 further engraved plates by Charles Heath after designs by Richard Westall, each with tissue-guard. Contemporary presentation inscription in ink to the front free endpaper verso of each volume "From an affectionate Father, to his beloved Daughter, Elizabeth Roylance Child. Cheltenham, June 29th 1825", with additional nineteenth-century family records in ink to the following blank. A good set, the bindings secure albeit with a 6cm split to the foot and a couple of worm-holes to the head of the lower joint of volume one, a 3cm split to the foot and a couple of worm holes to the upper joint of volume two, rubbing to the joints, wear to the corners, and some cracking to the hinges at the front and rear of volumes one and three. The contents with scattered spotting to some of the plates are otherwise in very good order. A splendid copy of Richard Westall and Charles Heath's beautifully illustrated edition of the King James Bible in a fine contemporary binding. Clearly originally presented as a meaningful gift, the set contains a touching inscription from a father to his then fourteen-year-old daughter, Elizabeth Roylance Child (1811-1841), who would later marry the Anglican priest and author John James Blunt (1794-1855).
