Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. First Edition. Small quarto, 152pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, very good, in the publisher's tan canvas cloth, stamped in red on the spine, and lacking the dust jacket. Rich black topstain. A few tiny cirner creases to a few pages, spine very gently cocked, and a contemporary gift inscription (partly effaced) on the front free endpaper. Still a sound, otherwise clean copy of this book not usually seen in nice condition. Wright wrote the text, and Rosskam selected the alluring and powerful photographs, many of which were taken by some of the greats of the period (Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and others).

Tall 8vo. 152 pp. Photo-illustrated title, photo illustrations & plates throughout. Beige publisher's cloth, red lettering on spine (minor age toning at fore-edges, slight shelfwear), w/ d.j. wraparound photo cover art photo by Walker Evans of "Flood Refugees, Alabama" (minor chipping & edgewear foot of front cover, chipping at head of spine, edgewear, old tape repairs on verso), still NF/G copy, w/ former ownership bookplate on front pastedown. Third printing, price of $ 3.50 on front flap, of this groundbreaking, gritty, and often biting photo essay by Wright tracing African-American progress "from the slave cribs of Africa" to the eve of World War II, surviving the depredations and racism of the Jim Crow South and the Great Depression, enhanced with photographs organized by Rosskam. The photographs capture the experiences of the African-American populace as taken by Farm Security Administration photographers including Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Jack Delano, Marion Post, Arthur Rothstein, Edwin Rosskam, Russell Lee, Carl Mydans, Ben Shahn, and even Richard Wright himself.
