Notable as one of the first professional athletes to transition, Richards underwent gender affirming surgery in 1975. After refusing to be genetically tested to enter the 1976 U.S. Open, she sued the United States Tennis Association, and in a landmark case for trans rights, the New York Supreme Court ruled in her favor, deeming Richards female in the eyes of the law. Richards continued competing until retiring from professional tennis in 1981, when she returned to her career as an ophthamologist. An uncommon signature. Inscribed by Author(s).
