Christian Friedrich Richter (1676-1711), "zu Halle a.S., ein mehr noch als Theolog und geistlicher Liederdichter bekannter Arzt, geb. 1676 zu Sorau in der Niederlausitz, studirte in Halle zuerst Medicin, dann Theologie, wurde 1698 zu Aug. Herm. Franke zum Inspector des mit dem Waisenhause in verbindung stehenden Pädagogiums gemacht und im folgenden Jahre zum Arzt an allen dessen wohltätigen Anstalten, denen er sein Leben lang treu gedient hat, ernannt. Eine von ihm zusammengestellte, Haus-, Reise-, und Feld-Apotheke fand so viel Beifall, dass zu der Herstellung der "Richter'schen oder Halle'schen arzneien" eine eigene Apotheke (die jetzt noch bestehende Waisenhausapotheke) errichtet werden musste, die lange Zeit 30-40.000 Thaler jährlich Gewinn abwarf. Es erschien anonym: Selectus medicamentorum zu einer compendieusen Haus-, Reise- und Feldapotheke (Halle 1702) und unter seinem Namen: "Recensio succincta de usu et officio medicamentorum quae Hallae in orphanotrophio distribuuntur" (Ib. 1708). Ueber eine von ihm"Essentia dulcis" genanntes Heilmittel schrieb er 2 Abhandlungen: "Ausführlicher Bericht von der Essentia dulci, ihre Zubereitung und Reife" (ahlle 1708) und "Merkwürdige Exempel sonderbarer, durch die seentiam dulcen geschehener Curen". Ausser einer med. Abhandlung über den Kreuztod Jesus verfasste ern noch ein viel verbreitets Buch: "Höchstnöthige Erkenntnis des Menschen, sonderlich nach dem Leibe und natürlichen Leben oder ein deutlicher Unterricht von der Gesundheit und deren Erhaltung u.s.w." The concept of period in medicine was used for the first time in the fifth century B.C. by Hippocrates in the description of the course of fevers, mainly malaria: fevers were continuous, quotidian, tertian and quartan. In the first century AD, Aretaeus states that mania occurs at intervals. Alexander of Tralles, a Byzantine physician who lived in the sixth century AD, held that manics present intervals and attacks such as occur in fevers that recur periodically". The word attack, originally used to describe attacks of fever, has become commonly used in psychiatry to describe crisis or episodes of psychic disorders. Similarly, the terms remission and intermission, coined to describe the course of fevers, are of common use in psychiatry. Even at the beginning of the 19th century Esquirol (1838), one of the fathers of modern psychiatry, spoke of folie continue, remittente ou intermittente. The intermittent course may be a regular one with quotidian, tertian, quartan, monthly, annual or pluriannual recurrences, or an irregular one. Many centuries after Alexander of Tralles, Georg Stahl (1701) wrote "De affectibus periodicis", F. Hoffmann (1740) wrote about "Melancholia hypochondriaca cum mania periodica alternans", and Medicus (1764) spoke of periodicity in his work "On diseases which maintain periods". From that time on, the word 'period' became fundamental in psychiatry and was gradually replaced by cyclical from the second half of the 19th century onwards ."
