Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Alison's Fishing Birds; Frederick L. Haig-Brown; Preface by Valerie Haig-Brown; Illustrated by Jim Rimmer, Colophon Books, Vancouver, 1980. Design, composition and presswork were done by Jim Rimmer of Pie Tree Press, who also did the pencil illustrations. Rimmer has signed the pasted in colour Kingfisher found on the title page. The book has also been signed by Valerie Haig-Brown, the author's daughter, who arranged to have this book created. Her father wrote the book circa 1939. This is copy #414 of 500. Paper used is Gutenberg Laid, and bindings are the work of Courtland Benson of Twin Doves Bindery. From the Preface - A couple of years ago I began the job of editing my father's papers. I found "Alison's Fishing Birds" and I could not help being thoroughly charmed, both as an editor and a daughter. From the author's opening paragraph - It is rather well worth writing about all Alison's birds, for at least two reasons. First, because Alison's house beside the river, the brown house with the pale blue trim on the windows, is in just the right place for Alison to see a lot of birds. And secondly because Alison is a quick little girl who likes to watch birds as well as almost anything, so that she generally sees what the birds are really like and what they really do. The author also wrote and published, before he wrote this story, the fly-fishing books "The Western Angler" and "A River Never Sleeps", as well as "Return to the River" This book, 35 pages, is in fine condition. A beautiful little Canadian private press book. Jim Rimmer (illustratore). Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Folio. 68, (3)pp. A range of samples from Rimmer's immense oeuvre chart his long career as a designer and compositor, visualizing his compelling, often coy, recollections. Among the samples are tipped-in sheets from Being Five or Six, the Pie Tree Press's edition of A Christmas Carol, and a color linocut from the Pie Tree Shadow River, as well as a quote from Rudolf Koch to exemplify Rimmer's Albertan type. Other examples fold out from the gutter: a Duensing Titling presentation in silver ink on handmade black paper; a practice in 24pt Fellowship type on the same; a compendium of popular types from Rimmer's youth printed in all their "rugged dignity" in red on white paper; and an eight-color block print of a tiger designed for, but ultimately unused by, the Shrine Circus. Of particular note is an illustration from The Adventures from Tom Sawyer, which was in-progress at the time of publication. Otherwise emblazoned throughout with photographs, drawings, typographic experiments, and a concluding page of Rimmer's commercial work, which includes the logos for Whistler mountain, the Hot Jazz record label, and the band Heart. As a much a book of personality as of the larger history of book and type design. Bound in quarter black leather with paper over boards stamped with the Pie Tree device in a repeating pattern. Housed in slipcase. Fine. Prospectus laid in, as is the program for an exhibition of Rimmer's work, held at Simon Fraser University, and the signed notecard, which has a reduced version of the Duensing Titling example tipped-in. One of forty copies. Initialed by Rimmer at the colophon. Signed note from Rimmer laid in.
