Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, viii, 1635 - 2337 pp. Entries EV25587-32588. The third volume (only) of a three -volume set. From a review by A.F. Kinney in the Journal of British Studies: "May in his introduction to the three-volume reference work reckons that his Index includes 99 percent of the extant verse printed between 1559 and 1603 as well as 12,000 poems from manuscripts of the period now housed in some ninety- three archives. All of this is remarkable. But in a way even more dazzling.is the extraordinary cross-indexing by subject. Broad subjects such as morality, love, women, and memorial verse are subdivided and even listed in different places: "morality" is listed under "morality" but also under "moral verse" if that is the verse's primary intent. Religious verse has been subdivided into "scores of categories". Fictional names - Achilles, fairies, and Queen Guinivere - are given separate entries from authors or titles, and there are a great many more headings such as astronomy, geography, hunting, medicine, law - these last two are especially extensive - women, actors, ale, and cutpurses. There is also a separate index to English poets, literary kinds, illustrations, poems set to music, rhyme schemes and verse forms, burdens, and refrains." Covers a trifle rubbed, otherwise Very Good.…

[lxx]; [1]; 578pp. Light wear to spine ends and extemities, a little dicoloration of the cloth to upper edges, strong and tight; internally clean, ownership to front pastedown; dustjacket with sunning to the spine panel, some wear and small loss to the spine ends and corners, and some tape reinforcement to the verso. A very good copy in a dustjacket with some wear and use. A collection of all the poems traditionally attributed to Philip Sidney, rendered rather more of a tricky scholarly endeavor by Sidney's erratic and rather cavalier attitude to his own work; he himself paid little attention to the preservation or publication of his poems, leaving people like William Ringler to put the pieces back together.…
