"The charismatic author of God is My Co-Pilot - continuously in print since 1947 and an inspiration to generations of flyers - writes a firecracker of an autobiography, a story alive with humor, excitement and the brash honesty that made Robert L. Scott a maverick in the Air Force and, indeed, for all of his life. In a richly generous account of his background and career, he writes of his family's patient forbearance with their son's determination to become a flyer - including the hair-raising episode of young Robert's first flight in a human-powered glider in a leap off a neighbor's roof, and his much later, absolutely last-ditch battle to get into the fledgling U.S. Army Air Corps. Concurrent with the grueling training that followed, Scott set himself to pursue - and won - his beloved lady, Kitty Rix. Once officially accepted by the Air Corps, he seized every opportunity to fly, volunteering for all kinds of extra duties, including danger-filled airmail runs in the dead of winter. By the time World War II broke out, he had built up an astounding number of flying hours, and, desperate to get into combat, was able to talk himself into the Pacific bomber command - though he had never actually flown a bomber (the closest he had come to any bombing experience was hand-dropping watermelons from a fighter plane in the California desert). But Scott was first, last and formost a fighter pilot - and he proved it from his first day in the combat zone of the Burma-China Theater. With Chennault's famed Flying Tigers he earned a reputation as a one-man air force, recording twenty-five kills by the time he was removed from that theater of battle. He writes with utter frankness of his bitter fight with one of Chennault's detractors; much of his subsequent sojourn in the Pentagon was devoted to extraordinary, and certainly extracurricular, maneuvering designed to get adequate weaponry out to the beleaguered command he had had to leave in Buma. Scott's all-out approach to living is the basis not only of his lifelong love affair with flying but of his characteristic commitment to walk the entire length of the Great Wall of China - an ambition achieved at the age of seventy-two, disguised for a good part of the way as an unlikely six-foot-three Georgia-born Chinese. He is a man whose whol life has been, and is, an adventure, from that early leap off a roof, to his motorcycle journey through Europe and halfway across Asia (following Marco Polo's old route), to flying his latest supersonic Air Force jet when well into his seventies and very long after his so-called retirement. He is a man who has always followed his dreams and spoken his mind. His autobiography is rich with the frank anecdotes of a flyer and a man reveling in the challenge of living.
