The compilation is organized by subject, with applicable portions of various laws selected for each heading. Unsurprisingly, many of the laws deal with free and enslaved blacks, including a law requiring a slaveholder t…o pay for goods stolen by his slaves, depending on how ill-fed or clothed they are. Other laws regulate dueling, stray livestock, religion (including a law outlawing the sale of alcohol within one mile of public worship), and prisons. "Volume Two includes Land Laws and Indian Treaties. The original bindings of this two volume set differ, although showing the same date of publication" - Allen. ALLEN 922. ALLEN MORE RARITIES 341. AII (TENNESSEE) 444, 445. Original calf, boards ruled in blind, gilt leather labels. Hinges cracked but holding. Spine leather cracking, boards somewhat scuffed. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on front free endpaper and titlepage of volume one. Moderate tanning and foxing, occasional dampstaining. Good overall.
