Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a fresh perspective on the history and development of English satirical art, from its ancient roots to contemporary trends. The author's unique approach focuses on the tension between artistic invention and literal depiction, examining how both elements contribute to the creation of powerful and effective caricatures. By tracing the evolution of caricature techniques and themes over time, this book offers insights into the social and political climate of different eras. Exploring works by renowned caricaturists such as William Hogarth, Gillray, and George Cruikshank, the author analyzes the use of exaggeration, distortion, and symbolism to convey messages and critique societal norms. Ultimately, the book explores the complex relationship between humor, satire, and the human experience, highlighting the role of caricature as a potent tool for social commentary and artistic expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

This limited edition copy of Captain Frederick Marryat's novel is illustrated with colour plates by Robert William Buss. This two-volume novel is centred on the lives the Thames watermen, and the episodes of the eponymous character's life that lead him to the Royal navy. Half Leather. Condizione: Good binding. Octavo. xiv, [2], 609, [1] pp. Early issue of the volume edition. In later 19th century morocco spine and corners. 39 of the 43 illustrations are present as well as 26 of the 32 illustrations done by Thomas Onwhyn for E. Grattan. The binding is rubbed at the extremities; front joint is starting to separate but the board is holding fairly well; wear at the head of the spine; scattered foxing; early ink note on the front free endpaper incorrectly tallies the plate-count. Early owner name of Malcolm MacLaren / March 1898 on a preliminary blank, penciled underneath with a London address in perhaps a different hand. An interesting extra-illustrated edition with a mixture of issue points and states of plates. This copy is lacking plates 22, 33, 35, and 37. Present are the earlier versions of plate 10 and 11 etched by Buss. Dickens didn't care for the plates and they were redone by Browne fairly early. In addition to the plates that were done for the edition, this copy includes nearly all of the plates engraved by Onwhyn and brought out by E. Grattan in a "pirated" edition. An interesting copy of one of Dickens's most popular books. Eckel writes: "It is quite probable that only Shakespeare's Works, the Bible and perhaps the English Prayer Book, exceed 'Pickwick Papers' in circulation" Eckel, p. 17. Smith I, 3; Hatton & Cleaver, p. 3-22; Yale/Gimbel H1120.…

First edition in book-form variant deluxe publisher's binding in original half burgundy morocco, green moirë watermarked satin cloth covered sides, black and gilt title lettering label and elaborate tools to the spine, marble end papers and text block edges, original silk tie. 8vo. 8¾'' x 5¾''. Variant deluxe publisher's bindings are known, including states in green moirë and half morocco (as here) and full morocco. Academics seem to have dismissed the variant bindings altogether, and as so little is known about the existence of these, a precedence has not been set. Being generally a mixed issue as described below, etched plates by Robert Seymour, H. K. Browne ('Phiz'), including 1 (of 2) suppressed plates by Robert William Buss, page 69 not present, page 74 present, stab marks present. A notoriously difficult book bibliographically. Several first issue points present: 'Weller' rather than 'Veller' on the inn sign but with first issue point with Phiz peut on the engraved title page. This copy with Directions to the Binder leaf with 6 line errata on verso; pages 25-26 a single inset leaf; that and the following leaf both bearing the signature mark 'E'; frontispiece stool has four stripes, a middle shield and signed Phiz Fecit (later there were five stripes); engraved title page reads 'Weller' (second plate) instead of 'Veller'; page 260 line 29, 'hodling' for 'holding'; page 261, line 6 'Picvick' for 'Pickwick'; page 267 '7' in page number slightly raised; pages 282 and 299 both with 'Chapters XXVIII'; page 303 lacking last '3'; page 341, line 1 has correct 'inde-licate'; page 341-2 is in an early state (Hatton & Cleaver, variant C C 2); page 342, line 5, uncorrected 'S. Veller'; page 432, the 'F' in headline is imperfect; page 553, 9 lines up 'Considdring for Considering'. Contains frontispiece, engraved title page, [xiv], 2, 609 printed pages of text with 41 illustrations throughout. Additional leaf bound after the third front free end paper with hand written notes concerning this being a first edition in original binding, below which a press clipping has been pasted with the title 'Dickens and Pickwick in Court'. Joints professionally repaired, some toning and foxing to plates as usual. Member of the P.B.F.A. DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). …
