Hard cover, 8vo in publisher's orange/yellow cloth boards with an illustrated dust jacket. With Introduction by Editor Richard Dalby. COLLATION: xii,173, [5] pp. CONDITION: Fine in Fine dust jacket. ** Modern limited edition of stories by the prolific writer, Gertrude Minnie Robins (1861-1939), who later published under her married name, Mrs. Baillie Reynolds. She began telling stories at a young age, encouraged by her brother who gained popularity by telling her spooky stories to his classmates at boarding school. ** Eight of the stories in this collection are from the first and second editions of "The Relations and What They Related" (1902), in which each guest at a Christmas family gathering tells a story to keep themselves amused, while waiting for their wealthy cousin to arrive from Canada. ** The stories include supernatural mysteries with a twist, reminiscent of Roald Dahl's "Tales of the Unexpected". They are: "The Relations and What They Related": "The Man With No Face - Dr Hardy (the Consulting Physician)'s Story", "The House Which Was Rent Free - Mrs Locke (the Young Matron)'s Story", "The Roman Road - Ralph Baring (the Country Solicitor)'s Story", "The Blathwaytes - Afatha Mayne (the High-School Teacher)'s Story", "The Weirdale Assize - Mr Hobson (the Elderly Cousin)'s Story", "A Twilight Experience - Stainley Rivers (the Minor Poet)'s Story", "The Legend of Deshon - Mrs Hogben (the Hosier's Wife)'s Story", "A Chance of Travel - Mrs Evelyn Baring's Story". ** Also included in the volume are four other stories: "The Haunting of White Gates", "The Old Card-Table", "A Witch-Burning", and "The Reluctant Inheritance", and a 1916 essay on Mrs Baillie Reynolds, "Modern Story-Writing", by the editor of the "Quiver" magazine. ** With the original illustrations by Arthur David McCormick (1860-1943). McCormick was made famous by his artwork for travel books, and was the artist with Sir Martin Conway's 1892 expedition to the Himalayas, and with Clinton T. Dent's 1895 expedition to the Caucasus Mountains. ** Sarob Press is a small press which has published reprints of classic ghost and horror stories, as well as contemporary authors. This book is part of a series reprinting works by neglected, but worthy, woman ghost-story writers, the so-called "Mistresses Of The Macabre". Book.
