ESTC T60642. First translation into English. 8vo, modern brown quarter calf, marbled paper boards, green leather spine label, gilt lettering. A colorful collection of portraits, part factual and part fiction, of legendary courtesans who were also influential women, by French writer and translator Anne de La Roche-Guilhem, first published in French in 1675. La Roche-Guilhem (1644-1710) was herself a colorful character and writer, whose Female Favorites was translated into four languages before this first English translation was published, where it fit into the popular genre of secret lives of ladies at court, etc. La Roche-Guilhem was careful to write about historical women and not contemporary ones, thus avoiding trouble from the powers that be. She lived the latter part of her life in England in an effort to avoid religious schisms in France. Moderate foxing and light browning; very good copy.

Tra le "favorite" ricordiamo Maria Padilla sotto Pietro il Crudele; Marie de Beauvilliers sotto Enrico IV; Roxelane sotto Solimano II; Giulia Farnese sotto Alessandro VI; Anne de La Roche-Guilhem (1644-1710)fu un singolare personaggio nella letteratura femminile: di confessione calvinista, si rifugiò in Olanda e si trasferì poi in Inghilterra. Fu feconda romanziera, e le sue opere circolarono in Francia clandestinamente.
