Versuche, die wissenschaftliche Genauigkeit erfordern, werden am besten in einem dunkeln Raum von hinreichender Länge angestellt. Für die Prüfungsobjekte wird ein Abstand von 5 oder 6 m gewählt, damit so die Akkommodation mit Sicherheit ausgeschaltet wird. Wird die Prüfung in der Weise gehandhabt, daß bei gleichbleibender Objektgröße der Abstand zwischen Objekt und Versuchsperson variiert wird, so ist es zweckmäßig, die Proben auf einem Tisch, leicht verschiebbar, (eventuell auf Schienen) anzubringen, wobei eine Maßeinteilung das Ablesen der Distanz ermöglicht. Manche Autoren geben dem konstanten Objektabstand den Vorzug, weil unter anderem störende Einflüsse, wie Bewegungswahr-nehmung usw. ausgeschaltet werden. Allerdings braucht man auf diese Weise eine größere Zahl von Probeobjekten in verschiedener Abstufung. Eine wissenschaftlich genaue Sehprüfung erfordert einen aufmerksamen und intelligenten Beobachter. Der Kopf wird am besten auf einer Kinnstütze fixiert. Zu empfehlen ist die Verwendung der Heringschen Dunkelröhre, einer schwarz ausgekleideten Pappröhre von 1 m Länge und 25 mm lichter Weite. An dem dem Beobachter zugekehrten Ende sind Blenden von 1 bis 2 mm Durch-messer angebracht. Die Sehproben können auf transparentem Grunde sein, wobei sie auf Mattglas oder Celluloidplättchen usw. als schwarze Objekte erscheinen. Es ist zweckmäßig, einen schwarzen, dicht abgeschlossenen Kasten zu verwenden, in dessen Vorderwand ein Ausschnitt für die Proben angebracht wird. Durch die hinter der Probe befindliche Lichtquelle (Glühlampe) erscheinen dieselben schwarz auf hellem Grunde. Eine ähnliche und ebenso zweckmäßige Vorrichtung erhält man mit Hilfe eines genügend großen schwarzen Schirmes, in welchem ein entsprechender Ausschnitt für die transparente Sehprobe angebracht ist. Für Sehproben, die von vorn beleuchtet werden, dient folgende Versuchsanordnung: Ein auf beiden Seiten schwarz überzogener Schirm aus Pappe enthält in der Mitte ein rundes Fenster von 6 cm Durchmesser. Man kann nach Bedarf kleinere Blenden vorschieben oder, was noch einfacher ist, man kann sich einer Irisblende bedienen, die jede gewünschte Öffnung gestattet. Durch eine Fallklappe läßt sich die Öffnung rasch verschließen oder aufdecken. Hinter dem Schirm befinden sich zwei rechts und links von der Öffnung angebrachte Lichtquellen.
