Durch die engen Hosen und das knapp dem Oberkörper anliegenden Wams als Angehörige eines iranischen Reitervolkes gekennzeichnet, haben sie ihre Waffe mit einem Lederriemen am rechten Oberschenkel festgebunden, damit sie diese beim Reiten nicht hindert. Stratigraphie, lkonographie und Stil datieren diese Reliefs in die Jahre um 360 v. Chr. Als fromme Gabe in ein Hauptheiligtum der Stadt geweiht, veranschaulicht die Tribune verschiedene Aspekte von Gottesvorstellungen und bezeugt zugleich die tiefgreifende Durchdringung nicht nur des sidonischen Fürstenhauses, sondern breiter Volksschichten mit westlichem Gedankengut sowie die Vertrautheit mit der Formensprache griechischer Bildhauer noch vor dem Alexanderzug, der die sogenannte hellenistische Epoche einleitet.

Lex.-8°. 300 Seiten, 60 Bildtafeln, zahlreiche Strichzeichnungen und Pläne, Pappband (sehr gut erhalten) (=Beiheft zur Halbjahresschrift "Antike Kunst", 17) Eschmun der jugendliche Gott der Vegetation war eine der wichtigen phönizischen Gottheiten und versinnbildlichte durch sein Sterben und seine Wiederauferstehung die Hoffnung… auf Gesundheit und langes Leben. Deshalb setzten ihn die Griechen später mit ihrem Heilgott Asklepios gleich. Ein bedeutendes Kultzentrum Eschmun's befindet sich einige Kilometer nördlich von libanesischen Stadt Saida, dem phönizischen Handelszentrum Sidon. Eingebettet in die fruchtbaren Plantagen am südlichen Ufer des Nahr el-Awali, des antiken Bostrenus, wurde das Heiligtum im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. von dem sidonischen König Eschmunazar II. gegründet und ist erst im 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. endgültig aufgegeben worden. Die reichen Skulpturenfunde aus den Grabungen Maurice Dunand's von 1963 bis 1978 vermitteln ein neues Bild vom Eindringen griechischer Stilelemente in die Kunst Phöniziens seit dem frühen 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Sie lösen die berühmten Reliefsarkophage der königlichen Nekropole Sidons aus ihrer Isolation und erlauben es, eine neue, stark von griechischem Empfinden geprägte Kunstproduktion Phöniziens zu fassen. Den Hauptanteil innerhalb der Votive im Eschmun-Heiligtum bilden sitzende, kauernde und stehende Knabenstatuen, welche die Eltern dem Gott mit der Bitte um Schutz und Segen ihrer Kinder geweiht hatten. Während die Skulpturen schon dem neuen griechischen Kunstempfinden verpflichtet sind, bleiben die an den Basen der Kinder angebrachten Votivinschriften in Sprache und Denken der einheimischen phönizischen Tradition verhaftet. Die Hellenisierung Phöniziens in vorhellenistischer Zeit manifestiert sich somit eher als eine Modeströmung, welche die lokalen Denkstrukturen und religiösen Vorstellungen kaum tangierte.
