Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. 1st U.S. Written about 1905, after Don Tarquinio, and considered libellous: 1st printing from the typescript From the front flap of the jacket: "The publication of this novel by Frederick Rolfe, self-styled Baron Corvo, is at last possible. Its real-life portraits 'drawn with Rolfe's usual brushful of acid,' caused th…reats of libel action soon after its writing around 1905, and no publisher dared issue it. It was long thought lost. Recently, when most of the models for its thinly-disguised characters were no longer alive to file suit, two typescripts turned up, one the the Harvard Library and the other in the Walpole Collection at the Bodleian at Oxford." VG orig. red cloth in lt. scuffed yellow dj.

Aggiungi al carrellodj. First Edition. [Modern Literature] FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[8] 344. Publisher's white cloth, with gilt titles to purple spine, and a purple design to upper. With the matching dust-jacket, priced at 30s. A crisp copy, showing light spotting to edges and title page. Jacket heavily toned, with we…ar and chipping to edges, especially spine. Very good. Completed around the year 1902, Baron Corvo's first novel was roundly rejected for publication by every major publisher until an edition of 2000 copies was nearly printed in 1909. With both printer and author facing imminent bankruptcy the project collapsed and the book remained unpublished until this edition was mooted in the 1960s.

With the typographic dust-jacket priced at 12s 6d to front flap. Top edge red. Internally clean, some light offsetting to endpapers. Gentle spotting/marking to jacket, toning to spine. Very… good. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very good. First Edition, first imp. 8vo. Publisher's dark purple cloth, with the decorated design by Rolfe in white to cover. Gilt titles to spine. To rear, bound in on a different paper stock and dated September 1903, 32 pages of publisher's advertisements, now slightly toned. Top edges gilt. With the au…thor's designed device to title page. Rolphe's masterpiece and still in print, features George Rose, its protagonist, in a not so thinly veiled self-portrait of the author, who lives out a wish fulfilment fantasy of being elected Pope. A previous owner has written across the front free endpapers in a small, neat contemporary hand a key to the main characters in the novel. To verso of the ffep the wonderful curse bookplate of C. J. Peacock, clearly not the writer of the notes, which offers the invocation, "who folds a leafe downe ye divel toaste browne / who makes marke or blotte ye divel roaste hot / who stealeth thisse boke ye divel shall cooke". His bookplate is found in a number of collections and on copies for sale. The gilt to the spine is bright, the boards are clean, with minor rubs to lower tips and spine ends and less so, upper tips. The prelims have some very faint mottling, the page edges are clean and free of spotting and marks. Overall a very well kept copy, bright, firm and square. One of 1500 copies, of which the first 700 copies featured the white design on the "dull purple cloth", the next 450 copies having the design stamped in blind. Woolf, A 6a.
