However, one possible source for such studies has so far been practically ignored: the ancient annotations or scholia on classical poetry. Yet these scholia are virtually all that has come down to us from the voluminous oeuvre of such great Hellenistic scholars as Zenodotus, Aristophanes of Byzantium and Aristarchus. The original works of these Alexandrian librarians were repeatedly excerpted and rearranged, until they finally resulted in the short, anonymous and often rather obscure notes that survive in the margins of medieaval manuscripts. -- In this book a systematic analysis of the critical scholia successfully exposes several of the principles underlying the original Hellenistic commentaries. The author combined a material analysis of the critical scholia (particularly those on tragedy and Homer) with a detailed investigation of the technical terminology they employ, the emphasis being laid on the pivotal concepts of psychagogía, fantasía, ýpótesis and oikonomía. On the one hand the findings illustrate the nature of classical scholarship in the Alexandrian Library, which played a vital role in handing down the classical literary inheritance to the Middle Ages. The modifications of what are unmistakably Aristotelian norms and views turn out to be especially revealing, throwing an interesting light on the development of literary theory in the Hellenistic Age. -- On the other hand, since the author in analysing the technical terms of criticism and rhetoric also took into account their connotations in a philosophical context, this study affords a striking new perspective on aspects of ancient poetics in general.
