First Edition, 1899. "George Augustus Selwyn (1719-1791) was one of Horace Walpole's oldest friends. A well known wit, he was equally celebrated for his necrophilia: his taste for executions was legendary. Expelled from Oxford for a blasphemous mockery of the mass, Selwyn was one of the inner twelve members of Sir Francis Dashwood's Monks of Medmenham otherwise know as the Hellfire Club. Another member of the group was the poet Thomas Potter, also accused of necrophilia. Selwyn's obsession with executions and corpses was so well known that he was the model (along with Algernon Swinburne) for Edmond De Goncourt's 'Gentleman Sadist' in his novel Le Faustin. It was widely reported [apocryphal story?] that he had travelled to Paris to witness the protracted torture death of the failed regicide Robert Damiens by drawing and quartering. His manner was such that an aristocrat at the scene asked him if he were an executioner and he replied No, monsieur, I have not that honour; I am only an amateur. When Selwyn made a visit to the dying Henry Fox, he was refused admission. Fox learning of this quipped, If Mr. Selwyn calls again, show him up. If I am alive, I shall be glad to see him, and if I am dead, I am sure he will be delighted to see me! Whatever the modern take on George Selwyn, it is apparent that his willing embrace of the darker side of human nature holds an enduring fascination whether we like to admit to ourselves or not." from the jacket flap. Bumped and rubbed fore-edge corners with wear to top and bottom edge spine, and lightly age-toned bottom and fore- text block edges. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Dark blue cloth with gilt floral pattern and lettering to front board and spine, and gilt top text block edge.
