Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Lee, Manning (illustratore). Children's story from the 1930s of "good times on a plantation" c. the 1850s, promoted as "another fine story of the South" by Knox, who had penned similar children's tales set in her native Alabama. The heroine of the tale is Miss Jimmy Deane, who spends happy times with her older sisters & new playmate, Darling, a young black slave "given" to her as the young mistress of the house as a lifelong friend & companion. And "happy times were had by all, both black and white." Typical of books in the Jim Crow-era South, which attempted to whitewash the South's dark history with slavery. Though praised as "cultural sensitive" at the time, Ms. Knox's books are today considered quite racist. In 230 pages, with pen-and-ink illustrations throughout & decorative endpapers by Manning Lee. Orig. published in 1931, this is a 1946 printing from Doubleday. Hardcover small octavo has red-orange cloth-covered boards stamped in black & with a black publisher's symbol to spine. Condition is Near Fine: exceptionally clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages creamy off-white with moderate tanning, but completely unmarked. Very mild corner bumping. The price-clipped DJ is Fair-Good: colorful & bright, but with some significant chipping, including large chunks missing from both ends of spine. rubbing to extremities, small chips, unclosed tears; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Hard Cover. Condizione: VG-. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG-. 1933 Printing. Octavo. Red cloth covered boards and spine with black lettering on the spine and black lettering and illustration on the front board. Plenty of bumping at the head and tail of the spine and at the tips of the corners, all with light accompanying rubbing. Rubbing is probably heaviest at the front corner of the head of the spine, where the cloth is just beginning to fray. Brown and white pictorial endpapers. Previous owner's name, info, and date on the upper edge of the front endpaper in blue pen. Binding is straight and tight. First few pages and half title have some foxing, and there is a dime-sized spot on the lower corner of pages 216-219 and a couple tiny spots here and there but pages are mostly clean. 230 pages. Dust Jacket - 1/3" of the head of the spine and of the tail of the spine has been chipped away with deeper chipping at the corners - 1" at deepest point from corner of the head of the spine. 2/3" chip in the tips of the two upper outside corners and a 1/3" chip in the tip of the lower front outside corner. Cream colored rear cover is almost entirely present but shows a fair amount of evidence of handling, spots, etc. over much of it. Tear along the rear edge of the spine separates the dust jacket into two pieces, but has been secured by a previous owner with some clear tape on the inside. Colors are still distinct on the front cover, which is also mostly present and, in the dust jacket cover, book still has a pretty nice overall appearance given it's age and the amount of use it seems that have gone through. Original $2.00 price on the upper corner of the front inside flap. Uncommon.
