Rosen, apres une vie consacree a l'enseignement et a la recherche linguistique (linguistique generale, langues classiques, langues semitiques) en meme temps qu'au service de l'Etat israelien et de l'hebreu qu'il contribua beaucoup a fonder dans sa forme nouvelle de langue nationale… moderne, a toujours manifeste son attachment a l'universite francaise, dont plusieurs eminents representants comme Emile Benveniste, Pierre Chantraine ou Michel Lejeune ont ete ses maitres et dont il a ensuite ete maintes fois l'invite.Ses origines comme ses contacts etroits avec diverses universites europeennes et americaines le qualifiaient particulierement pour ce regard d'ensemble sur le developpement de la linguistique au cours du dernier demi-siecle sur le continent europeen et pour une caracterisation des specificites de la linguistique europeenne par rapport aux grands courants venus d'ailleurs. Cette difficile synthese, dont il a fait beneficier le dernier Congres international des Linguistes dans un rapport tres condense, il l'a developpee ici a la fois avec ses preoccupations constantes d'information etendue et de rigoureuse honnetete dans l'expose des idees des autres et sans s'interdire de laisser paraitre ses positions personelles. Son expose, nourri d'une abondante bibliographie, met bien en evidence les orientations et les concepts fondamentaux qui marquent ces cinquante ans d'histoire de la linguistique europeenne - les notions de fonction et de structure sont mises en vedette - et souligne l'importance d'une recherche philologique qui en Europe est restee et doit rester etroitement associee a la recherche theorique pour soutenier parallelement dans leur developpement les travaux de la grammaire comparee et ceux de la typologie.
