Nach der Entdeckung der Röntgenstrahlen durch Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen im Jahr 1895, interessierten sich zahlreiche Ärzte für den Einsatz der Röntgenstrahlen in der Medizin. Der Münchner Physiker Josef Rosenthal (1867-1934) erkannte früh die Wichtigkeit von Röntgens Entdeckung und widmete seine Arbeit der technischen Weiterentwicklung von Röntgenapparaten. 1911 hatte er zusammen mit Julius Lilienfeld eine Glühkathoden-Röntgenröhre entwickelt, allerdings konnte sich diese nicht durchsetzen.
