Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. From wikipedia: "Adelaide Sophia Claxton (10 May 1841 ? 29 August 1927)[1] was a British painter, illustrator, and inventor. She was one of the first women artists to make a major part of her living through the commercial press, selling satirical and comic illustrations to more than half a dozen periodicals." This Claxton book is subtitled Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. Claxton did mostly illustrations for periodicals - she only produced two books which are quite rare. This book is filled with her often comic illustrations. Is this a first edition? The second author, Ross, has a preface dated 1875. That is the only date in the book. With a lot of searching of the internet we found an image of a different title page - the different one is in color and lacks the subtitle Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. The color title page looks like it might be from a soft cover edition, but that is not clear. The book is half leather on brown cloth. The spine has five hubs and a label. Corners and extremities are quite worn but the binding is very solid. Full refund if not satisfied.

An uncommon work of memoir off Alexander J. Ross, compiled by his wife Adelaide from a gathering of his thoughts and teachings in a biographical from whichtraces the life from childhood to end. A interesting insight into the life and writing of a man known to be one of the leaders of liberal thought in Christian Theology.In a fine full calf Relfe Brothers signed binding, prize binding awarded to Alice B. in 1905 for German exam. Illustrated with a photographical frontispiece of A. J. Ross tipped in. In a full calf Relfe Brothers signed binding, with five raised bands, decorative gilt tooling to the spine and extremities of the boards, marbled endpapers and edges. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only, a hint of sunning to the upper margin of the front board. Prize bookplate to the verso frontispiece, dated 1905. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with a photographic plate tipped in to the frontispiece. Near Fine. book.

Socialism is a word the definition of which no two people appear to agree about. Ask a dozen Socialists what they understand by their faith & they will each tell you something different.' The opinions depicted in the play are both 'clear' and 'foggy', 'but it is [in] no sense propagandist - I hate propaganda in art.' He goes on to discuss his own views: 'I am not a socialist. Socialistic & communistic ideals will undoubtedly be exploited in this country when Labour returns to power & I apprehend no vital or rational advantages under that regime.' In a twenty-three line postscript he expounds a position sympathetic to Fascism, beginning: 'The masses have always needed string to lead them. Take Italy & take England under the Commonwealth. You may regard dictatorship as in every sense reactionary; but weighed in the balance of national prosperity & increased well-being for the greater number, benevolent autocracy has a great deal to be said for it - given the men big enough to lead & powerful enough to impress their will on a nation & noble enough to act on high principles only.' He considers Britain to be 'a nation of political dwarfs. Labour has no genius to guide or guard, [.] In the Liberal ranks you see what I mean: Lloyd George genius without principle; Lord Grey principle without a ray of genius.'.

Condizione: Very good condition. A lovely mezzotint engraved portrait of the Queen (1792 - 1849), dressed in widow's garb, following the death of her husband King William IV of England. The capital city of the Australian state of South Australia was named in honor of the Queen when it was founded in 1836. South Australia was formed under the Act for the Colonization of South Australia of 1834, and was intended to be a haven of civil and religious liberties. The portrait of the Queen is a charming one; she gazes steadily out, her hair in braids, with a black lace veil over her head and around her shoulders. Engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall (1811 - 1867) engraver to Queen Victoria, and based on the painting by William Charles Ross (1794 - 1860). 13 1/2 x 17 1/2". Image printed and laid on to thicker paper; with very slt toning to thicker paper at outer edges, o/w very good.
