Aggiungi al carrelloTrade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, September 1960. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Unmarked. Spine straight, tight and uncreased. Foxing to edges and covers. Not from a library. vii + 146 pages. The National Purpose was a highly influential, five-part public debate and essay symposium jointly sponsored by Life magazine and The New York Times that aimed to address a widespread anxiety that post-war America had become overly materialistic, affluent, and complacent, losing its foundational sense of mission in the face of the escalating Cold War. The series emerged at a critical cultural and political juncture the end of the Eisenhower administration and the dawn of the 1960 presidential campaign. Spurred by massive economic growth, intellectual critiques like John Kenneth Galbraith's The Affluent Society, and Soviet advancements like Sputnik, policymakers and journalists feared Americans were prioritizing personal comfort over national survival. The series sought to explicitly redefine the country's collective goals. The symposium featured ten prominent American leaders, intellectuals, and public figures who published long-form essays in the pages of Life and The New York Times. Notable contributors included: Adlai Stevenson: The former Democratic presidential nominee argued that America needed to "extend our vision. to all mankind" rather than retreating into private wealth. David Sarnoff: The head of RCA argued for a aggressive, renewed dedication to democratic traditions specifically tailored to fighting and defeating global Communism. Billy Graham: The famed evangelist diagnosed a "moral and spiritual cancer" in the country, warning that an obsession with personal luxury was robbing citizens of their individual and national character. Walter Lippmann & James Reston: The legendary political commentators argued that the country was stagnant and waiting for a political innovator—asserting that a great nation requires decisive presidential leadership to guide public resolve. Other Authors: The series also featured essays from Archibald MacLeish, John W. Gardner, Clinton Rossiter, John K. Jessup, and defense strategist Albert Wohlstetter. The articles generated enormous public discussion and heavily shaped the rhetoric of the 1960 election, directly influencing John F. Kennedy's "New Frontier" campaign, which focused on sacrifice and national renewal.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. What's the one thing that you need to say but have never dared? And who needs to hear it?Based on the original concept by playwright Rachel De-Lahay, this follow-up volume to My White Best Friend (And Other Letters Left Unsaid) collects a series of personal letters, monologues and writings by 20 Black and ethnically diverse writers from across the North of England. Sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, sometimes political and full of fire, these letters explore the personal and political of the things we don't dare say - even to those closest to us.Originally commissioned by Everyman and Playhouse theatres, Eclipse and the Royal Exchange in 2021, in response to The Bunker Theatre's critically acclaimed 2019 festival, this volume contains a foreword by Rachel De-Lahay, creator of the project and editor of the first volume, as well as writings from some of the most exciting voices in the North of England: Levi Tafari, Brodie Arthur, Kiara Mohamed Amin, Yasmin Ali, Chantelle Lunt, Dominique Walker, Keith Saha, Samuel Rossiter, Cheryl Martin, Nikhil Parmar, mandla rae, David Judge, Yusra Warsama, Nick Ahad, Malika Booker, Jamal Gerald, Khadijah Ibrahiim, Chanje Kunda, Marcia Layne and Naomi Sumner Chan. …

Paperback. Condizione: New. The British electoral system treats parties disproportionately and differentially. This original study of the fourteen general elections held between 1950 and 1997 shows that the amount of bias in those election results increased substantially over the period, benefiting Labour at the expense of the Conservatives. Labour's advantage peaked at the 1997 general election when, even assuming there had been an equal share of the votes for the two parties, it would have won 82 more seats than its opponents. This situation came about because of different aspects of two well-known electoral abuses - malapportionment and gerrymandering. With the use of imaginative diagrams the book examines these processes in detail, illustrating how they operate and stresses the important role of tactical voting in the production of recent election results.…
