This book delves into the fascinating history of Catholic child welfare in Philadelphia, with a particular focus on the contributions of the German Catholic community. It meticulously traces the establishment and evolution of St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum in Tacony, from its humble beginnings in the mid-19th century to its growth and impact over the decades. The author skillfully places the story of St. Vincent's within the broader context of the social and religious landscape of the time. The influx of German immigrants, the scarcity of resources, and the dedication of individuals like Bishop Neumann and Father Holzer all played crucial roles in shaping the institution's trajectory. Through detailed accounts of the Board of Managers, the dedicated Sisters who ran the home, and the everyday lives of the children, the book explores themes of compassion, resilience, and community spirit. It sheds light on the challenges faced by immigrant communities and the unwavering commitment to providing care and education for orphaned children. Ultimately, this book offers a poignant and inspiring testament to the enduring power of faith and human kindness in transforming the lives of vulnerable children. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Prima edizione
First edition. London: Hurst and Blackett, 1865. xv, [1], 518 pages, plus [1]-page of errata at end. Illustrated with title-page vignette plus several engravings in the text by F.W. Fairholt. Original dark green cloth over beveled boards with a gilt cover illustration and lettering in gilt and blind; coated brown endpapers. 23 x 15 cm. Very good. The binding is exceptionally clean and bright with only minor signs of use. Aside from a few traces of light soiling, the leaves are in nice condition. The volume is slightly shaken and over-opened in places but the hinges are sound and all matter is holding well. PROVENANCE: Signed by F.K. Howard on the front endpapers and at the head of the title page and in pencil by Lydia H. de Roth on the title page. They were Francis "Frank" Key Howard (1826-1872) and his granddaughter, Lydia Howard de Roth (1891-1971). Frank Howard, the grandson of Francis Scott Key, was the editor of the Baltimore "Daily Exchange." Howard was imprisoned during the Civil War for his criticism of Lincoln's suspension of the writ of habeas corpus and the subsequent arrest of the mayor and city council of Baltimore. He wrote an account of his experiences in "Fourteen Months in American Bastiles" (1863). He died in London and is buried there. Lydia de Roth, also a native of Baltimore, was a writer and poet. During World War II, she served as an air raid warden during the London Blitz. FIRST EDITION. A richly detailed street-by-street, building-by-building account of London's most famous neighborhoods. "This book deals not so much with the London of the ghost-stories . . . as with the London consecrated by manifold traditions -- a city every street and alley of which teems with interesting associations . . . in short, this London of the present haunted by the memories of the past." --preface. "'Haunted London' (1865) was 'a huge book, full of most curious matter,' where [Thonrbury's] slightly macabre interests seemed more acceptable than in his purely historical writing." --Oxford DNB. Walter Thornbury (1828-1876) was a protégé of Dickens and the author of a large body of work including novels, histories, poetry, literary essays, and art criticism. He is probably best remembered for his "Life of J. M. W. Turner" (1861), the first full-length biography of the painter.
