First editions of all thirteen volumes of Beardsley's celebrated art-nouveau quarterly with plates after works by Beardsley, Sargent, Sickert, Rothenstein and may others. With literary contributions from luminaries such as W. B. Yeats, H. G. Wells, Henry James, Anatole France, Kenneth Grahame, et al.The renowned journal was conceived in 1894 by Beardsley and the American novelist Henry Harland, who explained: "In one of the densest and soupiest and yellowest of all London's infernalest fox, Beardsley and I sat together the whole afternoon . we thought it quite a pity that London publishers should fee themselves under any obligation to refuse any of our good manuscripts . and then and there we decided to have a magazine of our own and the next day we had an appointment with John Lane."What they had in mind was a literary journal that would attract attention for its content, format, and unique artistic vision. Beardsley, who served as the art director for the quarterly until his dismissal in 1895, due to his association with Oscar Wilde, was responsible for the cover designs for the first five volumes and, more importantly, for setting an aesthetic tone that touched on morbidity, eroticism, perversity and irony, The Yellow Book carried on until 1897, giving rise to a variety of artists and writers whose collective spirit gave rise to a cultural spirit that transcended Victoriana.A magnificent set. No Binding. Condizione: Near Fine. A neat archive of thirteen letters, comprising: two letters from William Rothenstein; one from Rachel Rothenstein; two from Thomas Keating; one from R. H. Bawden; one from Edward Croft Murray; one from Walter Thomas Monnington; one from Lord Cottesloe; one from R. B. Henderson; one from C. D. Sansom; a telegram from 'Tanis and Donald'; a list of contracts executed at historic and listed buildings by Roffe Limited. On a variety of subjects. The primary focus being a series of testimonials (Rothenstein, Monnington, Henderson, R. H. Bawden. Sansom) on Ososki's ability as an artist. Rothenstein writes: "You know how anxious I am that you gifted people should get on to the working path as soon as possible, & of course I like when I can, to help". They are generally concerned with Ososki's life and career as an artist, or as the proprietor of Roffe Limited. He established Roffe Limited during the economic slump of the 1930s, unable to support himself solely with his art. It specialised in interior decoration of theatres and cinemas. After the Second World War, Roffe Ltd turned to restoring historical English buildings, including St James' Palace, Bradenham Manor, The Savoy, Kensington Palace, The Sheldonian Theatre, Windsor Castle, and Buckingham Palace. An admirable resumé. It seems that Roffe Limited was not entirely fruitful. A letter from Thomas Keating, an artist known for his forgeries, dated 2nd March, 1962, reads: "Without wishing to reopen old wounds, I still consider Roffe Ltd owe me £24-10-0 from the last week's labours. This amount will help me considerably as I have no money and cannot obtain food". A fortnight later, in a separate letter, Keating responds: "Many thanks for your letter of the 9th March explaining your attitude towards my request, which I have assimilated […] My thanks also for the refund of £5". A letter from John Freemantle, 4th Baron Cottelsoe, 5th Baron Freemantle, describes an exhibition, organised by Ososki. He is "willing to make a [Walter] Sickert painting available" for exhibition. Finally, a letter from Rachel Rothenstein congratulates Ososki on his engagement. A nice archive of letters to artist Gerald Ososki (1903-1981), showing his broad and authoritative social network. He was well endorsed by his contemporaries in character and artistic ability, and this archive articulates that. He was born to Russian-Jewish parents in East London - his father was a tailor. He took night classes at St. Martin's School of Art from 1917-22, where his drawings were noticed by William Rothenstein, who facilitated his admission into the Royal College of Art on a scholarship.
