Paperback. Condizione: Fine. 2nd. 206 pages, illustrations (chiefly colour); 27 cm. Originally published for the exhibition at the Tate Gallery 17 June to 1 September 1987. Revised. Firm binding, clean inside copy. A large-format coffee-table book. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was one of a small group of great artists who helped establish New York as the dominant centre of world art in the 1950s, where he was one of the leading artists of the American-led Abstract Expressionist movement. Rothko's work was considered controversial in his elimination of line, leaving only colour to convey content. He remarked that he was "no colourist" and that to think so was to misunderstand his art, yet colour was his sole medium. At his death in 1970 Rothko left an immense store of paintings which became the subject of a celebrated lawsuit that brought the artist, his work and associates into the public eye. This book, first published to coincide with a major exhibition of Rothko's work in 1987, contains essays by two major scholars of the period, Professor Robert Rosenblum and Irving Sandler, along with contributions by two members of the Rothko Foundation, Bonnie Clearwater and Dana Cramer. Contributions from Michael Compton, then Keeper of Museum Services at the Tate Gallery, and leading critics David Sylvester and Robert Goldwater are also included. The bibliography and exhibition history have been fully updated for this edition." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Mark Rothko, by Irving Sandler; Notes on Rothko and tradition, by Robert Rosenblum; Reflections on the Rothko exhibition, by Robert Goldwater; Rothko, by David Sylvester; Mark Rothko, the subjects of the artist, by Michael Compton; Selected statements by Mark Rothko, by Bonnie Clearwater; Painting materials and techniques of Mark Rothko: consequences of an unorthodox approach, by Dana Cranmer. Size: 4to.…

Hardcover. Light grey blind-stamped paper over boards; black DJ with color illustration and yellow, white and grey lettering; color illustrated endpapers; 176 pp.; richly illustrated, primarily in color. "The first publication dedicated exclusively to Mark Rothko's art during the critical formative period of the 1940s. Examining the development and artistic exploration of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, this unprecedented volume presents the works of American artist Mark Rothko from the 1940s, a time when his most essential development as a painter occurred, dramatically and in a very compact space of time. During this period, Rothko moved from expressive figurative and surrealist canvases to more abstract multiform subjects and finally to his signature abstractions--luminous rectangles of color suspended in space. Richly illustrated with works by Rothko and his contemporaries, and with essays by prominent Rothko scholars, this important new book deepens our understanding of Rothko's art during this vital period, and that of the mature works that emerged from it."--Publisher's website. Good (Boards show shelf/edgewear; DJ shows shelf/edgewear, light foxing; interior is clean and tight.).…
