Tall 4to, 35.5cm., sewn binding in Henri Matisse-designed lighograph printed cover on black paper over cards (often mistaken for the DJ itself), with original brown kraft paper lit…hographed dust jacket. The dust jacket was often treated as a throwaway, especially since it was taped over, making it impossible to see the beautiful Matisse covers without tearing it; they are quite uncommonly seen. We have not attempted removing the dust jacket here, though we have supplied a photograph from another copy showing the design. This is a unique opportunity to for a collector to have not only a copy of the book *as issued* with the jacket, but a uniquely clean and fresh copy of the cover itself, entombed within the protection of the jacket. The book itself is exceedingly clean and sharp. Illustrated throughout in color and black and white with contributions from Verve's usual suspects: Matisse, Miro, Picasso, Rouault, Braque, and a spectacular center-fold lithograph by Pierre Bonnard. In spite of the statement in the 'Occupation notice that half the American edition was lost, this is not a terribly scarce book -- perhaps because subscribers immediately recognized the significance of what it represented, namely the destruction of the thriving modern art movement in France at the hands of the neo-classical obsessed Nazis. But the jacket and condition make this an uncommon survival.

In-4, en feuilles, couverture illustrée (emboîtage de l'éditeur).Edition originale du texte de Georges Rouault, Conseils du Maître au Frère Artisan, qui fut écrit en 1950 en vue de la publication d'un catalogue de l'uvre de Creuzevault pour lequel le relieur demanda à Mourlot d'exécuter en lithographie des reproductions de ses r…eliures. Le projet ne fut pas réalisé et cette plaquette éditée en 1983 à l'occasion de l'exposition Creuzevault à Bordeaux, réunit le texte inédit de Georges Rouault et 14 planches lithographiques dont 8 en couleurs. Tirage unique limité à 250 exemplaires numérotés sur papier d'Arches (21739 - HAU050 et DOC427).

Letter. A one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED with initials and written in French on a 4-3/4" x 6-1/2" sheet of paper folded in half with the address on the verso, date and place taken from envelope. Addressed to Mr. Gorardin [likely Maurice Girardin, a Parisian dentist who became a successful art dealer]. Roughly translated: "I ha…ve given the matter a great deal of thought and we will talk about it once again. Think about the workshops and let me know what you have learned, unless I find something at Versailles or farther. Forgive my reluctance. It is not due to a lack of confidence or of friendship which you will better understand when we talk. I hate to tie myself down but have a great love for my independence, and I don't know to which it refers, morally advantageous. See you on Wednesday." Rouault (1871-1958) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printer whose devout Catholicism heavily influenced his paintings whose subjects were primarily clowns, prostitutes, and Jesus Christ.
