First edition of this political anthology, reprinting pamphlets by such figures as John Milton, Gerrard Winstanley, Edmund Burke, and William Morris. Orwell and Taylor also provided introductions to volumes I and II, where the former wrote "it is necessary that people should once again become aware of the possibilities of the pamphlet as a means of influencing opinion" (p. 16). Orwell's death in January 1950 led to Taylor replacing him as joint editor of the series. 2 vols, octavo. Half-tone frontispiece to both vols, illustrations in the text. Original brown (vol. I) and red (vol. II) cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt. With dust jackets. Ticket of the Kitazawa bookshop, Tokyo, to front pastedown of vol. I. Minor bumping, light browning to endpapers; slight creasing, chipping, and toning to price-clipped jackets, each with several tape repairs to verso: a very good set indeed.
