Zeelieden op de oorlogsvloot lopen natuurlijk nog veel meer risic…o's op allerlei lichamelijke ongemakken. Door de aard van het werk is de aanwezigheid van een geneeskundige aan boord een absolute noodzaak. Immers, midden op zee staan geen ziekenhuizen. In de negentiende eeuw voltrokken zich in de Nederlandse zeemacht ingrijpende veranderingen. De gehele organisatie van de marine veranderde trouwens. De vijf admiraliteiten uit de tijd van de Republiek werden samengesmeed tot één zeemacht. De werkingssfeer van de Nederlandse zeemacht zou zich niet meer beperken tot de Europese wateren.
