L?archéologie hollandaise est très réceptive aux…courants méthodologiques issus de la New Archaeology. (?) Nico Roymans réexamine ici la notion de romanisation appliquée plus particulièrement aux régions comprises entre le Démer et l?estuaire du Rhin. Il considère que la majeure partie de la recherche passée et actuelle adopte un point de vue trop romano-centrique et mesure les réalités régionales en fonction de la norme romaine. (?) Les Bataves selon Nico Roymans représentaient le modèle paradigmatique d?un système idéologique cohérent de résistance socio-culturelle à la romanité. L?ethnicité germanique y constituerait un ?powerful concept in creating an ideology of resistance against the Romans? Le système de valeur dominant chez les élites est fondé sur la partialité, système dynamique et contraignant qui explique à la fois l?engagement militaire des Bataves dans l?armée romaine et le maintien prolongé des traditions locales, comme le pastoralism, les fermes en matériaux légers, ou le culte à Hercule Magusanus. L?urbanisation y serait très faible, et le seul fait de militaires et de commerçants ?étrangers?, à l?exclusion des élites bataves, cantonnées dans leur campagne et dans leurs sanctuaires ruraux. Il y aurait donc un modèle original de développement batave, à faible acculturation, face à un modèle rome par exemple où la romanisation est immédiate et intense. Roymans doit bien admettre que le système batave (?) est fort isolé et fait peu d?émules, même dans le Nord de la Gaule. Dès qu?on quitte les sables pour les loess céréaliers en tout cas, le schéma est différent et la région de Tongres (?) ne développe guère d?idéologie de la résistance. Les contributions de Colin Haselgrove et d?Alain Vanderhoeven le démontrent pertinemment et constituent des contre-exemples en ce qui concerne la permanence dynamique des structures indigènes même s?il est vrai que chaque ethnie césarienne, donc dans beaucoup de cas, chaque cogitas possède une identité culturelle, un paysage, des traditions agraires que la romanisation si intense soit-elle n?occulte jamais totalement et qu?il faut tenter de découvrir. (?) Je ne suis pas convaincu que celui de l?oppidum Batavorum soit vraiment différent. (.) Reste qu?il est essentiel que cet ouvrage soit lu et médité. Il est clair que le mythe de la romanité triomphante doit laisser la place à de multiples scénarios d?interaction culturelle dans l?analyse de la romanisation.?
