The frontispiece, printed by Hermann Silwar's renowned Berlin workshop, is especially vivid. Overall, this is a well-preserved and complete example of an important early German design publication, seldom found in such sound, unrestored state. Issued in 1915 as a Beilage (supplement) to the March issue of Das Plakat, Neue Deutsche Buchillustration was compiled and edited by art historian Rudolf Bleistein for the Verein der Plakatfreunde, the Society of Poster Lovers in Berlin. It presents a survey of contemporary German book art on the eve of modernism, featuring work by illustrators such as Ernst Aufseeser and others experimenting with Jugendstil and expressionist line. The catalogue demonstrates the transition from late Art Nouveau ornament to the clean, structural aesthetic that would later define German graphic design. Printed and hand-colored by Hermann Silwar Kolorier-Anstalt, this beautifully produced portfolio stands as both a document of early twentieth-century book illustration and a collector's artifact of pre-Bauhaus design culture.
