So bildete sich Chrobak völlig selbständig zu einem ausgezeichneten Frauenarzt aus. 1871 habilitiert, 1880 Extraordinarius geworden, lehnte er 1885 eine Berufung nach Prag ab und trat auf Drängen Th. Billroths 1889 als Ordinarius die Nachfolge August Breiskys als Vorstand der II. Geburtshilflichen Klinik in Wien an. 1908 zog er sich von seiner klinischen Tätigkeit zurück und übergab den nach seinen Plänen errichteten mustergültigen Neubau der Universitäts-Frauenklinik seinem Lieblingsschüler Alfons von Rosthorn. Chrobak war eine ungewöhnliche Persönlichkeit, voll Idealismus, Herzensgüte, Pflichttreue und Wahrheitsliebe, erfüllt von echter Humanität. Mit größtem Verantwortungsbewußtsein stellte er - nur auf das Wohl des Kranken bedacht - die Operationsindikation. Er war ein glänzender Operateur, der nicht nur alle bekannten Methoden vollendet beherrschte, sondern auf vielen Teilgebieten Neuland betrat. Wegweisend sind seine Arbeiten über die Enukleation von Myomen aus der Wand des Uterus. Die retroperitoneale Stielversorgung nach supravaginaler Amputation des Uterus trägt seinen Namen. Das Coxarthrolisthesisbecken wird nach ihm benannt. Unter Chrobakschem Zeichen versteht man das ruckartige Eindringen einer Sonde in das morsche Gewebe eines karzinomatösen Geschwürs."
