Meteorologisch sind sie der Erdraum, in dem die Sonnenstrahlen unter keinem kleineren Winkel als 45° und mit entsprechend hoher Wärmeentwicklung auffallen. Der Tropenrand ist gleichzeitig die Grenze der Fr…ostzone, die Verbindungslinie der Orte an ihrer Peripherie, deren Temperatur-Minimum der Nullpunkt und damit der Gefrierpunkt des Wassers sind. Die Frostgrenze ist eine unsichtbare Grenze, sie ist die erste in der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Organischen entstandene und von außerordentlicher Bedeutung für sie, teilt sie doch alles Lebende in Tro-pisten und Nichtropisten. Im ganzen verläuft sie in Wendekreisnähe. Tropisten sind Organismen, für die das Hineingeraten in die Frostzone schädigend auf die Fortpflanzungsfähigkeit und damit auf den Artbestand wirkt. Für Nichttropisten soweit sie der nördlichen Halbkugel angehören, nennt man sie Holarktiker bedeutet das Erleben des Gefrierpunktes die Voraussetzung zum Funktionieren der Sexualität. Im äußersten Falle genügen für sie die Temperaturen zwischen +4 und 0° C, bei denen die zum Gefrieren führende Ausdehnung des Wassers bereits eintritt. Da selbst der Körper der höchststehenden Wirbeltiere zu etwa 70:0/o aus Wasser besteht - die Geschlechtszellen im Körperinneren aus weit mehr -, läßt sich die Bedeutung dieser Spannungsänderung im Gewebe ahnen. Daß sie aber zur einschneidensten Grenzziehung in der Verbreitung des Organischen führen würde, ist eine ebenso große physiologische Überraschung wie die Ausdehnung des Wassers in Gefrierpunktnähe eine physikalische ist. Der Bergwald am Tropenrande, von dessen Tiertypen einige der am meisten charakteristischen Warmblütler hier skizziert sind, ist der Südostasiens von Sikkim bis Zentralformosa. Die Frostgrenze teilt ihn in einen unteren tropischen, in dem 12 6Va Monate eine Luftfeuchtigkeit von 80% und darüber herrscht, und in einen oberen subtropischen mit winterlichen Minima von etwa - 2 bis - 5° C sowie mit einer Luftfeuchtigkeit von 75% und darunter. Sie verläuft in sehr verschiedener Höhe. In Darjeeling (Sikkim, 27° N), dem Zufluchtsort der ehemaligen Residenz Kalkutta in der feuchtheißen Zeit, liegt sie um 2400 m, in Westchina (30-24° N) zwischen 1800 und 1300 m, in den Bergen um Kant9n (23,3° N) um 500 m, in Zen-tralformosa (23,3° N) um 1400 m. Diese Schwankung ist darin begründet, daß die Sikkim und Westchina nördlich vorgelagerten Hochgebirge eine unübersteigbare Schranke für die schweren winterlichen Kaltluftmassen Sibiriens bilden. Sie finden aber von der Mandschurei her breiten Zugang nach Süden, so daß im Hinterland von Kanton auf 24° N der Gefrierpunkt 2000 m tiefer liegt als in Darjeeling auf 27° N. Der subtropische Bergwald wird nicht nur von Subtropisten bewohnt. Seine Wärmeinseln besiedeln Tropisten bis 30° N (Stachelschwein, Roter Muntjak) ; in seinen Schluchten am Nordhang und an windumbrausten Abstürzen haben sich kältegeprägte zentralasiatische und sibirische Formen (Bärenmakak, Nörz) aus früheren Zeiten der Erdgeschichte her gehalten oder fliegen Dezember Januar von Zentralasien oder dem nördlichen Pazifik her zu (Stein-, Seeadler). Für den Lebensverbundenen mit heimlichen Bewegungen und wachen Sinnen ist der subtropische Bergwald Südostasiens der biologisch interessanteste Festlandsbezirk der Erde."
