Alles bedarf einer Rechtfertigung seiner Existenz, nur das Kunstwerk nicht. Das schöne Werk bleibt autonom und einzigartig, während das mißlungene Werk Teil der Biographie eines Individuums oder einer Gesellschaft ist. Der Maler, Zeichner und Schriftsteller Rudolf Schlichter (1890-1955) wird neu entdeckt und neu gesehen. Neben der Hauptschrift »Das Abenteuer der Kunst« enthält dieses Buch ein Rundfunkgespräch Schlichters mit den Künstlern Werner Gilles und Richard Ott sowie mehrere Texte aus dem Nachlaß Rudolf Schlichters. Im Nachwort erörtert Dirk Heißerer die Entstehungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte der hier vorgelegten Äußerungen Schlichters.
