Hardcover. 4th printing. xvii, 289 p.; front. (port.); 24 cm. Books written by Rufus Jones, p. 287-89. [First printed in 1951] `Rufus Jones was at first Chairman, and then Honorary Chairman of the American Friends' Service Committee, from 1917 to his death in 1948. He saw the work expand until its usefulness circled the globe. The story of this extraordinary adventure in the practice of the Sermon on the Mount cannot be told here. Rufus Jones, in his book, A Service of Love in Wartime, has pictured what was done during the First World War, but when that ended, doors of opportunity stood so wide open, calls of need were so insistent, the Quaker conscience was so aroused, and the testimony of unselfish care for enemy and friend alike had proved itself so cogent, that the work expanded by leaps and bounds. It is typical of the Committee's strategy that when, in the early 1920's, Herbert Hoover faced the problem of starving German children, the Quakers spent over $12,000,000 in answer to his call, and at one time furnished at least one meal a day to 1,200,000 German children. The Committee's spirit was dramatized in 1938 when, amid the Jewish calamities in Germany, Rufus Jones led a delegation which went to Berlin and faced the Gestapo at Hitler's headquarters. "We do not ask who is to blame for the trouble which may exist. We do not come to judge or criticize but to enquire whether there is anything we can do to promote human welfare and to relieve suffering." Those who suppose that the Quakers were or are discouraged because such attempts to implement the Christian ethic did not solve the international problem or prevent the Second World War, do not understand the Quakers.'
