Als Mitglied des Leipziger Künstlervereins, des Verbands Deutscher Illustratoren sowie des Vereins der Leipziger Jahresausstellung suchte er Anschluss zu progressiven Künstlern. Er war auf wichtigen Ausstellungen vertreten, u.a. der Grossen Stuttgarter Landesausstellung sowie der LIA. Hammer gilt zudem als einziger deutscher Pressezeichner, der 1919 zu den Friedensverhandlungen in Versailles zugelassen war. Sein vielseitiges Werk zeigt eine konsequente Auseinandersetzung mit den avantgardistischen künstlerischen Entwicklungen seiner Zeit. Einzige Monographie zum Künstler. Sprache: Deutsch 1200 gr.
