Rutherford, Ernest and H.T. Barnes AND a paper by Miss J.M.W. Slater, "Heating Effect of the [gamma] Rays from Radium" in the Philosophical Magazine, May 1905, series 6, vol 9 no. 53, pp 621-628 in the full monthly issue of pp 621-732. Also bound with: (Miss) J.M.W. Slater, "On the Excited Activity of Thorium" pp 628-645. This is the full monthly issue, extracted from a larger bound volume. GOOD condition. Was Miss Slater (BS from London and Bathurst Student at Newnham) an assistant at the Rutherford lab at McGill (where he was situated from 1898-1907) like the better-known Harriet Brooks? I can't find anything beyond this 1905 paper about Miss Slater, and can find no other biographical info, and I was guessing about the Rutherford part, especially as her paper follows Rutherford's in this volume. However, at the end of her rather longish article (pp 628-644) Miss Slater expresses thanks to JJ Thomson for information and guidance and seems to say that her work was undertaken at the Cavendish Lab. This would make sense too as it would fit in both the Rutherford and Thomson camps concerning thorium. And of course Thomson was a professor to Rutherford at the Cavendish lab before Rutherford moved on to Montreal, and they shared a long and dedicated relationship between the two men and their labs. In short, I can't say where Miss Slater did her work. (Rutherford did mention Miss Slater four times in the 1905 edition of his classic "Radio-Activity" (second edition) with the thorium work presented here appearing on pg 354. She does not however get a mention in "Radiations from Radioactive Substances" in 1930.
