Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 126 Pages An As New book with no defects. This is a pictorial book with multiple black and white images on every page. Most of the photos are historical with captioned dates. The real San Francisco lies below the streets, sidewalks, and buildings, hidden from view. This famous city is known for its beautiful setting of water, trees, hills, and beaches, but relatively few people know of its true natural state. Before it was built up and paved over, the earth here was a diverse ecosystem of creeks, marshes, sand dunes, estuaries, and densely forested hills. Over this landscape roamed elk, rabbit, bears, bobcat, and mountain lion, and the now-crowded bayfront teemed with mollusks, otters, dolphins, and whales, while huge flocks of birds blocked out the sun overhead. Today, only about two percent of the citys' natural areas remain as they were. Summers in San Francisco are foggy because the cold and wet weather on the shoreline travels east toward the warmer areas of central California. With the city's microclimates and subtle seasons, the weather is hard to predict. During the summer, cold ocean currents carry warm northern weather south, and it often passes east of the city. Summer visitors prepared for sunny California are happy to find sweatshirts for sale at Fisherman's Wharf, where it can be unexpectedly cold and foggy. San Francisco is also not a place for ocean swimmers; surfers wear wet suits to ward off the cold. Generally, oceanic San Francisco is colder than the lands to the east, and the west side of the city is cooler than the east. But there are also many days of mild and pleasant weather. It does not rain much in San Francisco, and even when it does it is not usually torrential. San Francisco is a place where one can avoid the extremes of winter and summer, but these extremes can be found within a few hours' drive. The weather during the average day varies from sunny to foggy and windy, so one should dress for both the cold and the warm. The city's diversity of microclimates creates a unique diversity of plant and animal communities. Nowhere else on earth are there 47 square miles with drifting sand dunes, coastal prairie and coastal scrub plants, freshwater lakes, creeks, seeps and acquifers, oak woodlands, serpentine grasslands, perpendicular rock formations, saltwater estuaries, tidal marshes, and seven miles of beach facing the Pacific Ocean.
