Die Verlagerung der Manuskripte aus ihrem bisherigen physikalischen Zustand in einen digitalen Raum wirft neue Fragen auf und zieht Folgen nach sich, die geklärt und gelöst werden müssen. So muss neben der langfristigen Sicherung und Zitierbarkeit der Daten oft auch der Einsatz von Schnittstellen für übergreifende Portale gewährleistet werden. Darüber hinaus werden digitalisierte Handschriftenbestände auch in Hinblick auf verschiedene Disziplinen befragt. Der vorliegende Band bietet eine Auswahl der bei einer Tagung im Januar 2013 in Trier vorgestellten Projekte. Alexandra Büttner und Michael Kautz stellen die Bibliotheca Laureshamensis digital , das elektronisch verfügbare Pendant zur Klosterbibliothek Lorsch, vor. Anja Jackes erläutert das Projekt Nova Corbeia , bei dem ein Online-Portal mit einer Wanderausstellung kombiniert wurde. Stefan Knoch präsentiert die digitale Kaiser-Heinrich-Bibliothek der Staatsbibliothek Bamberg und Hans-Günter Schmidt mit den Libri Sancti Kiliani digital die Digitalisierung der Handschriften der Würzburger Dombibliothek. Schließlich skizziert Christoph Winterer ein Vorhaben zum Bücherbesitz der Mainzer Stifte und älteren Klöster. Durch die Zusammenstellung dieser verschiedenen Projekte mit ihren je eigenen Zielsetzungen, Fragen und Methoden soll ein Einblick in die aktuelle Situation der Digitalisierungsprojekte und die darüber hinausgehenden Folgen und Entwicklungen für die Forschung gegeben werden. Orietta da Rold führt mit Manuscripts Online ein Portal vor, dessen Ziel es ist, die Ergebnisse verschiedener Digitalisierungsvorhaben zusammenzuführen. Florian Enders, Celia Krause, Rainer Stotzka, Danah Tonne und Philipp Vanscheidt zeigen anhand des Bestandes der Trierer Abteibibliothek von St. Matthias Möglichkeiten auf, Digitalisate computergestützt für sich anschließende Forschungsfragen zu nutzen. Kristin Hoefener formuliert in ihrem Beitrag musikwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen, Jennifer Bain, Inga Behrendt und Kate Helsen stellen mit dem Optical Neume Recognition Project ein Unternehmung zur automatischen Erkennung von Neumen auf digitalisiertem Material vor.
