Our broad empirical findings are indicative in many ways. First, the increasing average annual trends in technical efficiency for all ownership groups indicate an affirmative gesture about the effect of the reform process on the performance of the Indian banking sector. Second, the higher cost efficiency accrual of private banks over nationalized banks indicate that nationalized banks, though old, do not reflect their learning experience in their cost minimizing behavior due to inefficiency factors arising from government ownership. This finding also highlights the possible stronger disciplining role played by the capital market indicating a strong link between market for corporate control and efficiency of private enterprise assumed by property right hypothesis. And, finally, concerning the scale elasticity behavior, the technology and market-based results differ significantly supporting the empirical distinction between returns to scale and economies of scale, often used interchangeably in the literature. …

This has led to a significant emphasis on the efficient utilization of their resources. This present monograph discusses the uses of various variants of data envelopment analysis (DEA) models for evaluating firm efficiency in different industries. In this volume, we first contrast both frontier translog production function and DEA for estimating returns to scale and efficiencies by applying them to data on Indian Steel industry. Second, we use DEA to estimate the technical efficiency of a number of firms in the Indian pig and sponge iron industry. The methods of cross-efficiency matrix, distribution of virtual inputs, and returns to scale are also used to get further insights. Third, DEA is applied to 28 Indian Sunrise Industries to measure their technical progress. The method is further used to find out the lagging and/or surpassing periods, which reflect their change in technical efficiency.
