Los inicios de los estudios de género en el campo de la Historia del Arte se pueden ubicar en la década de 1970, a partir del artículo de la historiadora del arte estadounidense Linda Nochlin titulado «Why have there been no great women artists?». Este ensayo provocó una fuerte reacción académica, ya que ponía el énfasis en el hecho manifiesto de que la historiografía artística había ignorado a las artistas. A partir de ese estudio, y a pesar de haber sido silenciadas durante siglos, la comunidad científica comenzó a preocuparse por evidenciar la importancia que estas habían alcanzado a lo largo de la historia, dando con ello continuidad a la historiografía artística de los estudios de género. Fruto de ese interés surge este recorrido cronológico por la creación artística femenina en España durante los siglos XIX y XX, que cuestiona el relato hegemónico de la Historia del Arte desde distintos puntos de vista, sustituyéndolo por otro más acorde con la realidad. Para ello se ha analizado de forma global el proceso vivido por las creadoras de diversas disciplinas artísticas, con el fin de desentrañar qué artistas estuvieron en activo, en qué consistió su formación artística, cuál fue su perfil profesional, qué canales siguieron para la exhibición de sus obras, cuál fue la fortuna de su recepción crítica, qué lenguajes artísticos emplearon y cómo evolucionaron; en definitiva, cuál fue el lugar que ocuparon en la cultura artística.
