Aggiungi al carrelloVG orig. blue cloth, blue upper edge. 176 p.; 4 halftone pl. from documents; 20 cm. Detailed account of examination and trial 1605-6 of Hugo Gurgeny (b. 1570?) `The Inquisition came to Portugal in 1536. During its existence no word could be printed, and few spoken without the knowledge of a body of men whose business it was to f…ind harm in most things. It was the Comite de Salut Publique, the Ochrans, the Ogpu, the Gestapo and the Star Chamber rolled into one; with the difference that all parties were equally suspect in its eyes and that until its very latter days it was quite incorruptible. It has been estimated that between 1536 and 1821, in Lisbon alone, 355 men and 221 women were burned alive; 6005 men and 4960 women were turtured; besides these 706 men and 546 women died in prison. This calculation is based on surviving documents, and owing to the vicissitudes these have undergone--including two fires, the great earthquake, and the French occupation when the Inquisition was used as administrative headquarters--it is probably well within the mark. There is no record of how many became insane, but it is likely that the percentage was very high. The following is an account of how an English gentleman, of some learning but not much cunning, fought against it for liberty of conscience and the respect of treaties' (p. 11 f.) from his summons and denunciation on 25 August 1605, through his sentence to be burned alive -- headed off by his profession of conversion and recantation -- until his conditional release on 27 June 1609, after which no trace of him survives. The author had full use of the undisturbed original documents, whose facsimiles show the contrast between his initial firm signature against the sprawling letters on his discharge. Binding is Hardcover.
