Macksey was a celebrated Johns Hopkins University professor whose affiliation with the university spanned six and a half decades. A legendary figure not only in his own fields of critical theory, comparative literature, and film studies but across all the humanities, Macksey possessed enormous intellectual capacity and a deeply insightful human nature. He was a man who read and wrote in six languages, was instrumental in launching a new era in structuralist thought in America, maintained a personal library containing a staggering collection of books and manuscripts, inspired generations of students to follow him to the thorniest heights of the human intellect, and penned or edited dozens of volumes of scholarly works, fiction, poetry, and translation." - Johns Hopkins University.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Recent events have focused attention on the perceived differences and tensions between the Muslim world and the modern West. As a major strand of Western public discourse has it, Islam appears resistant to internal development and remains inherently pre-modern. However Muslim societies have experienced most of the same structural changes that have impacted upon all societies: massive urbanisation, mass education, dramatically increased communication, the emergence of new types of institutions and associations, some measure of political mobilisation, and major transformations of the economy. These developments are accompanied by a wide range of social movements and by complex and varied religious and ideological debates. This textbook is a pioneering study providing an introduction to and overview of the debates and questions that have emerged regarding Islam and modernity. Key issues are selected to give readers an understanding of the complexity of the phenomenon from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The various manifestations of modernity in Muslim life discussed include social change and the transformation of political and religious institutions, gender politics, changing legal regimes, devotional practices and forms of religious association, shifts in religious authority, and modern developments in Muslim religious thought. Key Features *Each chapter contains an overview of relevant secondary literature and concludes with a summary of the key ideas presented and a set of questions *Contributing authors include some of the best-known academics from various disciplines in the field presenting state of the art scholarship in their specialised areas An introduction to and overview of the debates and questions emerging regarding Islam and modernity. Libro.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Tome XLIII, Numero I. In English. This book came from the collection of Daniel Bell, the renowned sociologist. The essays are A New Look at 'National Identity' by Bernhard Peters; Do the old exploit the young? Is enfranchising children a good idea? by Karl Hinrichs; Social justice and the three worlds of welfare capitalism by Wolfgang Merkel; The public sphere and Muslim societies by Dale F. Eickelman & Armando Salvatore; Rationality and identity: a critique of Alessandro Pizzorno; and Rehabilitating the politician by Kari Palonen (they threw that last one in for humor). You can see the covers in the photos. They're very clean. It looks like Dr. Bell penned the number '1' on the front cover. That is the correct number. It does look like they may have printed the wrong number on the Journal (that gives it inestimable monetary value). The covers are in solid condition. A little bit of crinkling in a place or two. There's a thin scuff on the spine. The interior looks perfect. Dr. Bell did not write his name or anything else in the book which I would've preferred. The pages are perfectly clean. I don't see any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no writing of any kind. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. That should cover it.

The study is located at the crucial intersection between a variety of disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities. It discusses the long-term dynamics of Islam as both a religion and as a social, political and cultural force. The volume focuses on ideas of knowledge, power and civility to provide students and readers with analytic and critical thinking frameworks for understanding the complex social facets of Islamic traditions and institutions. The study of the sociology of Islam improves the understanding of Islam as a diverse force that drives a variety of social and political arrangements. Delving into both conceptual questions and historical interpretations, The Sociology of Islam is a transdisciplinary, comparative resource for students, scholars, and policy makers seeking to understand Islam's complex changes throughout history and its impact on the modern world.
