Nach einem abgebrochenen Studium in Wien und Aufenthalten in Deutschland und Frankreich emigrierte Spiegel in den 1930er Jahren in die USA. In den 1950er und 1960er Jahren feierte er mit internationalen Großproduktionen große Erfolge und war bekannt für seinen Perfektionismus sowie seine Fähigkeit, außergewöhnliche Talente zusammenzubringen. Spiegel gewann dreimal den Oscar für den besten Film eine außergewöhnliche Leistung , und zwar für On the Waterfront (Die Faust im Nacken, 1954, Regie: Elia Kazan), The Bridge on the River Kwai (Die Brücke am Kwai, 1957, Regie: David Lean) und Lawrence of Arabia (Lawrence von Arabien, 1962, Regie: David Lean). Weitere Produktionen umfassten The African Queen (1951, ungenannt), Suddenly, Last Summer (Plötzlich im letzten Sommer, 1959), The Chase (Jagd auf Johnny North, 1966) und Nicholas and Alexandra (1971). Spiegel war eine ebenso schillernde wie umstrittene Persönlichkeit im Filmgeschäft brillant, kompromisslos, visionär und gilt heute als einer der einflussreichsten Produzenten des 20. Jahrhunderts.

In New Orleans in 1937, a traumatized young woman struggles with memories of her cousin, who died under strange circumstances during a European vacation the previous year. Nominated for two Academy Awards, including one for Best Actress for both Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. Set in New Orleans and throughout Spain, shot on location in Spain and England. 8 x 10 inches.
