The ad, torn from a newspaper placed on the cover. First American edition. The Wrong B…ox is a black comedy novel co-written by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne, first published in 1889. The story is about two brothers who are the last two surviving members of a tontine. The book was the first of three novels that Stevenson co-wrote with Osbourne, who was his stepson. The others were The Wrecker (1892) and The Ebb-Tide (1894). Osbourne wrote the first draft of the novel late in 1887 (then called The Finsbury Tontine), Stevenson revised it in 1888 (then called A Game of Bluff) and again in 1889 when it was finally called The Wrong Box. A film adaptation, also titled The Wrong Box, was released in 1966, and a musical in 2002. Condition: Spine ends rubbed and corners rubbed, corners bumped, some uneven sunning to covers, over opened else about very good.

Folded two page hand written letter from Lloyd Osbourne held inside four mounted corners to the front free end paper, probably to his literary agent. Dated February 8th 1909 'My dear Collis?, I am sending you today, under cover, two more stories. 'Bonesay', must not be published in England until August 15th, nor 'Welfare Wicks' before June 1st. 'Bonesay' fits to an exact length, 15,000 words, it is divided nicely into 3 parts, each of 5000. Why not try one of the 'Worriers Wreckers'? in the 'Queen' or '?' or 'The Sphere', might also consider it as a 3 part series. I shall send you another story in a few days. Ever sincerely yours Lloyd Osbourne', p.s. A smart sub-editor could easily alter 'Bonesay' so as to make the few and ? English, you might suggest this L. O.' Arrival and Received stamp to the top of the letter, the literary agent has ticked positive appropriate points in red across the letter.
