In-folio de titre gravé, 86 pp., (1) f. bl., 80 planches / titre gravé, (1) f. blanc, 42, (2) pp., 50 pl. / 24 pl. First edition. This "Perspective", divided into 3 parts, is illustrated with 2 engraved titles and 154 plates. Mathematician and military engineer Samuel Marolois (1572-1627) came from a French Protestant family exiled in the Netherlands. He designed the fortifications of the Dutch town of Coerverden. For him, perspective was a branch of mathematics. These plates were engraved by Hondius, most were drawn by Vredeman de Vries and plates 54-59 by the painter Pieter Stevens. Fine engraved title page in front of the first part and another for the second part. The latter is curiously titled "Perspective 5e partie de Joan Vredem Vriese augmentée et corrigée en divers endroits par Samuel Marolois", but all copies are so titled. Provenance: - Copy of Jérôme II Bignon (1627-1697), Grand Master of the Library of King Louis XIV, and Conseiller d'Etat, with his coat of arms gilted on boards. - Armorial bookplate of the de Verthamon family (Limousin, Guyenne). - Old handwritten bookplate on endpaper: "Edouard Renaud, de Gravelines, Dép. du Nord, étudiant à Cambrai, demeurant à Paris." Text paper browned. Outer margin of second title trimmed. Some light spotting in lower margins of some plates. Tear to corner of page II, 37, away from printed surface. The last two plates are slightly creased. A very handsome copy in gilt vellum. -.…

First German edition of the first systematic manual of Dutch fortification, with the accompanying second German edition of a manual of geometry, both by Samuel Marolois (ca. 1572-1626/27), a Dutch military engineer who taught practical mathematics in The Hague, first published in French in 1615 and 1616 but here translated from the French editions of 1627, where Albert Girard for the first time greatly revised and expanded the Fortification. The plates of the Fortification show fortification plans, sections, elevations, perspective (including bird's-eye) views, profiles, etc., as well as building equipment and materials, cannons, and the layout of camps and barracks. Some of the fortification plans are based on real cities, including Coevorden and Oostende. The Geometria covers plane and solid geometry, surveying, mensuration, the making of maps and ground-plans, and fortification. Its plates include surveying instruments, fortification plans and a stunning and detailed view of a town on a waterway in a hilly landscape. A graphic curiosity is the use of a picture of an eye to indicate sighting lines. With an old owner's name. With a couple creases and a marginal tear in the first engraved title-page, the letterpress leaves of the first work somewhat browned and occasional mostly marginal water stains (slightly affecting the last three lines of text or the foot of an engraved figure in a few leaves), but still in good condition, most of the plates very good, and with generous margins. Important and very well-illustrated manual of Dutch fortification.l Cockle 821; Jordan 2383 & 2385 (5 & 1 copies); STCN (1 copy of each). With an engraved title-page with the German title on a letterpress slip, 42 numbered double-page engraved plates (1-40 + 14 bis & 17 bis), a woodcut tailpiece (plus 1 repeat), woodcut decorated gothic initials (3 series), headpieces built up from typographic ornaments, and a double-page letterpress table. Pages: Engraved title-page + 111, [1 blank] pp. + a folding table; engraved title-page + 187, [1 blank] pp. With: (2) MAROLOIS, Samuel. Amsterdam, Johannes Janssonius, 1627. With an engraved title-page with the German title on a letterpress slip, 47 numbered double-page engraved plates (1-42, 1-5), woodcut head- and tailpieces, woodcut decorated initials (2 gothic and 1 roman series) and decorations built up from typographic ornaments. Set in fraktur types with incidental roman. 2 works in 1 volume. Folio. 20th-century half tan leather, sewn on 5 supports, decorated coated-paper sides.…

Folio. 95 S. mit gestoch. Titelbordüre und 275 Abbildungen auf 80 doppelblattgr. Kupfertafeln.- II.: Architectura.

Rare first German edition of the richly illustrated and intellectually ambitious work by Samuel Marolois (ca. 1572-1627), standing at the intersection of art, mathematics, and applied science in the early seventeenth century. Marolois was a military engineer of French origin active in the Dutch Republic, and he was among the most widely read authorities on perspective in his time. His Perspective, first published in French and Latin in 1614 as part of the Opera mathematica in The Hague, enjoyed considerable success, evidenced by numerous subsequent editions and translations. Marolois' treatise is divided into theoretical and practical sections, reflecting the dual foundations of perspective as both a mathematical discipline and a tool for artistic and technical application. Drawing upon earlier authorities such as Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), Hans Lencker (ca. 1561-1630), and Sebastiano Serlio (1475-1554), rather than his near contemporary Simon Stevin (1548-1620), Marolois situates his work within a broader European tradition of geometrical inquiry. With two ownership inscriptions on the title page, the first from Tholen, The Netherlands, dated 1620, the second "Gijsbert Martini Anhaltin." A contemporary manuscript annotation on leaf 43 in German discusses measurements or observations of the eyes, noting the absence of a fixed reference point, that the eye height is aligned with a horizontal line, and that the term "om" denotes the distance of a person from the section being examined. There is some very minor staining to the vellum. Figure XXIX is unbound and loosely inserted, according to Millard, this plate is unrecorded in Hollstein and appears to function as a cancel slip, as the accompanying text refers specifically to this more elaborate version rather than to the simpler figure on plate 5. Pages 91-93 are bound in the wrong order, the leaves are slightly browned, and occasionally stained. Otherwise in very good condition.l Nanobashvili, et al, "Punkt, Punkt, Komma, Strich, Zeichenbücher in Europa, 1525-1925", (2014), pp. 227-229; STCN 217375944 (1 copy); USTC 2020459 (1 copy); VD17 12:196781N; WorldCat 1067829658 (1 copy); cf. Millard, Northern European Books, no. 62. Contemporary overlapping vellum, blue edges. With an engraved title page, 80 engraved plates consisting of 275 illustrations signed by Hondius in the first leaf, and woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces throughout. 7 parts (paginated as 6) in 2 volumes. Complete works of Samuel Marolois (1572-1627), including the works of his predecessor Jan Vredeman de Vries (1527-ca. 1606/08) that were edited with numerous additions by Marolois. Marolois was a French mathematician, who published in the Low Countries and taught Henricus Hondius. Here all the works are edited, corrected and revised by Albert Girard, who also revised the mathematical works of Simon Stevin. Marolois's Geometria presents a thorough pictorial course of all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, proportion, surveying, perspective, etc. His Fortificationis, first published at The Hague in 1615, represents the most outstanding text book, richly illustrated, on the Dutch art of fortification at the beginning of the 17th century. Vredeman de Vries's Architectura, originally the third volume of his Perspectiva, gives a pictorial course in the basic rules of architectural design, with plates by De Vries and his most gifted pupil and successor, Hendrik Hondius (1573-1650). The text consists mainly of the explanations of the plates. In good condition, with the lower outside corner of the first part of the second volume frayed, without affecting the text; some minor water stains and foxing. Bindings worn but skillfully repaired. Rare early editions of Marolois's works, issued with a general title-page and in a contemporary binding.l STCN (4 copies); WorldCat (4 copies); ad 1: cf.
