An early English translation by Georgina S. Grahame of this charming children's story from the original French of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, better known by her pen name George Sand. A notable Romantic novelist, better known in Britain than Victor Hugo and Honore de Balzac in the 1830s and 1840s, Sand published over seventy novels in her lifetime, alongside fifty other works. The present volume is one of a selection of children's tales in a series entitled Contes d'une grand'mere. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with slight bumping and rubbing, leading to light loss of cloth to the extremities. Slight discolouration and further scattered marking to both boards, most prominent to the rear. Hinges a little weak, especially to the front. Internally, reasonably firmly bound with slight periodical weakness, more so to the first few pages.
