These are encountered in many critical areas of everyday life such as transportation networks, electric power distribution grids, and social networks of mobile users. STN modeling and computations raise significant challenges. The model must meet the conflicting requirements of simplicity and adequate support for efficient algorithms. Another challenge is to address the change in the semantics of common graph operations, such as, shortest path computation assuming different semantics, or when temporal dimension is added. Also paradigms (e.g. dynamic programming) used in algorithm design may be ineffective since their assumptions (e.g. stationary ranking of candidates) may be violated by the dynamic nature of STNs. In recent years, STNs have attracted attention in research. New representations have been proposed along with algorithms to perform key STN operations, while accounting for their time dependence. Designing a STN database would require the development of data models, query languages, and indexing methods to efficiently represent, query, store, and manage time-variant properties of the network. The purpose of Spatio-temporal Networks: Modeling and Algorithms is to explore this design at the conceptual, logical, and physical level. Models used to represent STNs are explored and analyzed. STN operations, with an emphasis on their altered semantics with the addition of temporal dimension, are also addressed.…

Die deutsche gesetzliche Rentenversicherung geht auf die Bismarcksche Sozialgesetzgebung mit der Kaiserlichen Botschaft vom Jahr 1881 zurück. Sie besteht vor allem aus den drei Bereichen: Rentenversicherung der Arbeiter, Rentenversicherung der Angestellten und Knappschafts-versicherung. Die im Jahr 1889 geschaffene Invaliditäts- und Alters-sicherung umfasste eine Versicherungspflicht aller Arbeiter ab dem 16. Lebensjahr und bestimmter Angestellter. Die Gewährung der Rentenleistung war dahingehend beschränkt, daà sie nur der Linderung wirtschaftlicher Not bei Auftreten der Erwerbslosigkeit und bei Erreichen des Rentenalters diente. Durch die groÃe Rentenreform im Jahr 1957 wurde eine Dynamisierung der Rente als Lohnersatzfunktion eingeführt, wobei eine Vollversorgung der Rentner angestrebt wurde. Durch den Ausbau des staatlichen Alterssicherungssystems nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg stiegen die Rentenausgaben zwischen 1960 und 1989 von 16,6 auf 182 Mrd. DM. Diese Beträge entsprechen 6,9% bzw. 10,4% des jeweiligen Volkseinkommens. Trotz des hohen Anteils der gesetzlichen Rentenversicherung am Volkseinkommen besteht ein Forschungsdefizit auf diesem Gebiet. Die meisten Untersuchungen befassen sich entweder rein theoretisch mit der Ãberlegung, welche Probleme bei einem Wechsel des Finanzierungssystems auftreten würden, oder mit der Prognose, wie sich der Beitragssatz bei einer Beibehaltung der gegenwärtigen Praxis infolge der demographischen Entwicklung in den nächsten Jahrzehnten ändern müsste. Dagegen existieren wenige empirische Studien, die den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Umlageverfahren und der Ersparnisbildung der privaten Haushalte nachgehen.
