Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Very Good. The work of Barnett Newman (1905-1970) has come to define the spiritual aspirations and material innovations of American painting in the mid-20th century. Best known for his zip paintings--in which thin vertical lines rise through large, bold planes of color--Newman's work was an abrupt departure from his contemporaries' gestural abstraction, yet anticipated Color Field painting. During the last five years of his life, Newman worked primarily in acrylic rather than oil paint, used increasingly vibrant colors, and experimented with shaped canvases. When he died at the age of 65, he left a group of works hanging in his studio, some deemed unfinished. Centered on three of these works, this book builds upon ten years of exhaustive technical research to provide a rare glimpse of Newman's relatively mysterious artistic process. The first scholarly publication devoted to the last years of Newman's oeuvre, it features more than 20 paintings from this period and earlier. The authors present eye-opening analysis of these unfinished works as well as rich insight into Newman's full body of work. This striking volume also includes photographic close-ups and scientific imaging that reveal previously unknown aspects of Newman's mediums and techniques. An enlightening study of Barnett Newman's last works, based on a decade of exhaustive research Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.…

Hardback. Condizione: New. This is the most comprehensive exploration of Donald Judd's paintings and early works to date, providing unparalleled insight into the pivotal seven-year period in which the revered artist transitioned from two to three dimensions.Donald Judd's radical work and thinking helped shape the look of the late twentieth century and continue to influence artists, architects, and designers worldwide. He exercised a transformative influence over the ways in which both art objects and practical designs are produced, exhibited, encountered, and used. While primarily known for his three-dimensional sculptural work, most notably his famed "stacks" and "progressions" series, Judd began life as a painter. Between 1957 and 1963 he produced around eighty works on canvas: distinctive explorations of line, color, and non-representational composition that would directly inform the iconic three-dimensional objects that followed. This fully illustrated volume is the most comprehensive exploration of Judd's painting and early works to date, providing unparalleled insight into that pivotal seven-year period, and tracing his transition from two to three dimensions. The book features newly commissioned photography of all of Judd's paintings, in addition to his early experiments with wall-based sculptures, as well as extended essays from three leading art historians.Eileen Costello, historian of modern and contemporary art, discusses Judd's eventual rejection of, or transition from, the canvas in favor of the sculptural form. Sarah K. Rich, an associate professor of art history at PennState, Pennsylvania, and director of its Center for Virtual/Material Studies, deconstructs and analyzes Judd's painterly technique and the resulting works on canvas. Lynn Zelevansky, historian, curator, and former Henry J. Heinz II Director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, provides an overview of the period and the peers alongside whom Judd was formulating his paintings and early works.Donald Judd was born in 1928 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and died in 1994 in New York. His work is held in numerous collections including those of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate, London; and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The Museum of Modern Art presented a major retrospective of Judd's work in 2020-21. In 1986, Judd founded the Chinati Foundation/La Fundación Chinati in Marfa, Texas, for the permanent installation of his large-scale works. In 1977, he established the Judd Foundation in New York and Marfa, Texas.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good to fine condition. First edition. Large Quarto. 139 (5)pp. Original off-white cloth with b/w horizontal square design and black lettering on cover, black lettering on spine. Title page printed in red and gray across two pages. "Newman's desire for his work to have a palpable and emotive presence is aligned with the philosophy espoused by the de Menils: that art is living and breathing and should not be relegated to a historical past or neutralized by too much didactic material. This spirit is particularly embodied in Newman's "Broken Obelisk," 1963/67, acquired by John and Dominique de Menil in 1969 and installed in front of the Rothko Chapel. Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the sculpture has come to stand for visionary thought, which for Newman was at the heart of all his endeavors." (Foreword). Profusely illustrated with color reproductions of Newman's art, and color and b/w photographs of Newman at work or in social environments. Binding with very light smudging.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. In his book "A Lover's Discourse", Roland Barthes attempted to theorize the language used by lovers to describe each other. It is arguably a text about loneliness, suggesting that even romantic language confesses the distance that always exists between people: if we could achieve perfect unity with others, language would not be necessary. This catalogue documents an exhibition about how "couples" discourse - about the ways in which artists cope with the social connections and practicalities of being artists in a couple. It is about the commonalities as well as the differences, the intimacies as well as the public articulations - in other words, the negotiations that are required in any relationship. It might be a truism to say that the very notion of "the couple" is undergoing significant transformation at the moment. Legal changes now allow many same-sex marriages in the United States, even as increasing numbers of people both gay and straight choose to enjoy unions and family structures beyond such conventional forms. Now is, of course, the perfect time to investigate more carefully the ways in which artists construct and articulate their positions as "couples.".…
