Machars Prosabuch "Rom" ist die intensive, teils ironisch eingefärbte, farbenprächtige Schilderung der touristischen Route zweier Rombesucher, eines Böhmen, der in Wien seinen Wohnsitz hat, und einer jungen Russin, die sich augenscheinlich auf der Flucht befindet und in ihrem Begleiter den Verdacht erweckt, sie könne eine Attentäterin sein. Beider Dialoge erzeugen eine hohe Spannung, wozu außerordentlich auch die Vielfalt politischer Bezüge und Aktualitäten der Entstehungszeit des Werks beiträgt: beispielshalber die Frage des Verhältnisses des Königreichs Böhmen zum österreichischen Kaisertum. Neben der Geschichte und Politik mehrerer Länder interessieren den Verfasser des Rombuchs die mehr als zwei Jahrtausende der europäischen Kunst- und Literaturgeschichte von der Antike bis zur Moderne, Städte wie Venedig und vor allem Rom und die Italiener, dazu das römische Umland und seine Natur. (Rara, rariora, rarissima; Band I/Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Bachmann 2010) - Joosef Svatopluk Machar (1864-1942) war in der österreichischen Kaiserzeit einer der Inspiratoren der böhmisch-mährischen literarischen Erneuerungsbewegung, die 1895 mit dem Manifest der Tschechischen Moderne vor das Lesepublikum trat. Sein Prosabuch Rom, das hier in der deutschen Fassung von Emil Saudek (1908) neu gedruckt vorliegt, wurde zur Zeit seiner Erstveröffentlichung als gewichtiger tschechischer Beitrag zur Weltliteratur eingeschätzt. Es ist die intensive, teils ironisch eingefärbte, farbenprächtige Schilderung der touristischen Route zweier Rombesucher, eines Böhmen, der in Wien seinen Wohnsitz hat, und einer jungen Russin, die sich augenscheinlich auf der Flucht befindet und in ihrem Begleiter den Verdacht erweckt, sie könne eine Attentäterin sein. Jahrhundert ihren ernstlichsten Feind in der weltlichen Herrschaft des Papstes für Böhmen war um 1900 immer noch die Beziehung des Landes zur römischen Kirche prekär. Von hier aus kommt in Machars Schilderungen eine merkliche antiklerikale Komponente, die den Einfluß von Autoren wie Shelley, Heinrich Heine und Nietzsche bezeugt.
