Pen name Christopher Murray Grieve (11 August 1892 9 September 1978). A Scottish poet, journalist, essayist and political figure. He is best known for his works written in 'synthetic Scots', a literary version of the Scots language that MacDiarmid himself developed. However, Grieve's earliest work -- such as Annals of the Five Senses was written in English, and from the early 1930s onwards much of the poetry published under MacDiarmid's name was written in an English that was supplemented to varying degrees by scientific and technical vocabularies. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 107 pages;

Red Cloth Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good-. First Edition. 1947. First edition. 74pp., 2 pages of advertisements, and colour and black and white illustrations, both on plates and within the text. Scottish Art and Letters was a journal dealing with all aspects of Scottish culture and criticism, and ran from 1944 to 1950. This third issue contains articles by William Montgomerie, Joseph MacLeod, and others. There are short stories by Fred Urquhart and Balfour Brown, and poetry by several Scottish poets. The book is bound in the original brick-red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and top corners and some very faint patches of damp fading on the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and bumping and nicks to the spine ends and corners. Small pieces are missing from the bottom of the spine. There is a 1" hole in the rear spine edge with some surrounding small tears that have been repaired on the reverse with tape.

This is addressed to Robin Alexander, minor 60s Edinburgh poet, and his wife. Slim green cloth hardback with gilt titles to spine. Endpapers and edges slightly browned, very light wear to corners but overall very good. Dust jacket unclipped in protective plastic cover and good to very good with light edge wear, small stain to front, spine a little sunned and small loss (~5mm) to top of spine. Inscribed and Signed by Author.

Gentle wear and pushing to spine ends and corners, boards gently soiled. Toned, inscribed in blue pen to ffep: "With best wishes from Helen./ July 6 1946," pencil notes underneath and to front pastedown identify the inscription as that of Helen B. Cruickshank. Else, clean and tight. A pleasing association copy, inscribed by Grieve's close friend and fellow poet and player in the Scottish Renaissance. Very good Includes a Glossary to rear. The selection, through which Saunders Crombie aimed to present "the cream of Hugh MacDiarmid's poetry while exemplifying the varied nature of his work," includes one poem that first appeared in The Modern Scot, 'Harry Semen' (see ref. 2444) Helen Burness Cruickshank (1886-1975) was another Angus-born poet with links to the Scottish Renaissance (see also item 5). Having submitted poems to Christopher Grieve's new anthology, Northern Numbers, the two poets became lifelong friends, as well working together for Scottish PEN; Cruickshank began as Honorary Secretary, but later took over the helm from Grieve. Indeed, Cruickshank's Edinburgh home, Dinnieduff, became a centre of Scottish literary activity and society during this period, which Cruickshank later referred to as a watershed time in her life. She was also a founding member of the Saltire Society.
